Huskies start season Aug. 26 vs. Augsburg
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The St. Cloud State women's soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Soccer Coaches Poll, announced by the league office Monday. After missing out on competing during the 2020 season due to the pandemic, the Huskies are looking to continue its upward trajectory in the NSIC after reaching new heights in 2019.
In 2019, St. Cloud State qualified for the NSIC tournament for the second consecutive season after posting a 11-4-3 overall record during the regular season, including a record-breaking 10-3-2 mark in NSIC play. St. Cloud State defeated rival Bemidji State 1-0 in the opening round of the conference tournament that season to advance to the NSIC Semifinal round for the first time in program history.
"We're energized for the opportunity to play and compete this fall," said head coach Gretta Arvesen. "We have critical experience returning in our team leaders; Nicole Friis, Claire Shea, Cassidy Lehrke, Evie Kohn and Juliana Da Silva. They are ready to lead the way and set the standard. We're excited to be together and continue the evolution of Huskies Soccer. As we've said throughout the summer, it's time to write our story."
With a stacked roster filled with talented newcomers and wily veterans, including senior forward Claire Shea (Excelsior, Minn. / Chanhassen), junior forward Jenna Dominguez (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva Community) and redshirt senior Nicole Friis (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North), the Huskies are poised to finish in the top-half of the NSIC once again. She was named to the 2019 All-NSIC second team after scoring seven goals and recording five assists. She scored three game-winners for the Huskies and was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week once in 2019.
