Huskies look to stay hot after consecutive weekend sweeps
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (8-4, 4-3 NSIC) will travel to Rogers, Minn. this weekend for a pair of NSIC matches. The Huskies will face off against the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks on Friday, March 31st at 11:30 A.M and then will play the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on Saturday, April 1st at 3:00 P.M.
St. Cloud State Huskies
St. Cloud State is coming off of their second consecutive weekend sweep and are in the midst of a four match winning streak. The winning streak has propelled the Huskies into 7th place in the conference, but they are tied for 3rd in the conference in overall wins with eight. The Huskies defeated Winona State 4-3 last Friday in a thrilling match. With the score tied 3-3, Maria Molitor came through for the Huskies with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 victory in the final singles game of the match to put the winning point on the board for St. Cloud State. The Huskies followed up the nail-biting victory with a dominant 6-1 victory over Upper Iowa. Johana Brower captured her 10th consecutive singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Katie O'Brien. Brower is now one of ten players in program history to record a singles winning streak of ten or more matches. All of the wins have come in straight sets which makes the feat even more impressive. Three other Huskies also have a singles winning streak of four matches. Arisa Kashima, Maria Molitor, and Claudia Muñoz Perez are all in the midst of a four-match winning streak. Olivia Fredrickson and Molitor are leading the Huskies in doubles wins on the year. The pair has a record of 7-3 together this season.
Minnesota State Mankato
Minnesota State Mankato (8-1, 5-1 NSIC) is coming into this match with a six-match winning streak on the line. The Mavericks have dominated their past four NSIC matches as they have recorded lopsided wins over UMary, MSU Moorhead, Upper Iowa, and Winona State. Mankato is currently placed 2nd in the NSIC and have built off of their 4th place finish from last season. The Huskies have a 16-7 all-time record against Mankato, but they lost 2-5 in last year's matchup. This Mavericks team is a very different team from last year. In July, Mankato named Jeffrey Thomae as the new head coach as he replaced Ryan Kucera. The roster is also completely revamped as the Mavericks only have four returning players on their current roster of 18 players. Only two of the players on the roster are upperclassmen, but that has not stopped them from succeeding this season. This should be a very competitive match with both teams on long winning streaks.
Southwest Minnesota State
Southwest Minnesota State (2-10, 2-4 NSIC) is coming off a split weekend with a 6-1 victory over MSU Moorhead and a 0-4 loss to UMary. The Mustangs are having a rough season after being at the top of the conference last year. SMSU sits in 8th place in the NSIC partly because of their two conference wins, but have struggled overall on the year. St. Cloud State has had a tough time against the Mustangs the past couple of years as they took two 3-4 losses the past two years. Overall, the Huskies have dominated Southwest as they hold a 15-2 record all-time against the Mustangs. Southwest will play Minnesota Duluth on Friday prior to their matchup with St. Cloud State.
St. Cloud State has been on fire after a slow start to the year. Following the 2-5 loss to UMary on February 26th, the Huskies have won seven of their past eight matches with five of the wins by multiple points. This will be a competitive weekend for the Huskies in the Rogers Tennis Center, but with the way St. Cloud State is playing, sweeping their third consecutive weekend is not out of the question.
