Huskies snap three game losing streak with win
Orlando, Fla.- St. Cloud State Women's Tennis (2-3, 0-3 NSIC) defeated Calvin College (5-1) 7-2 Saturday afternoon. The Huskies had a near sweep of the doubles points as they won two of the three matches and were able to win five of the six singles matches.
Doubles
St. Cloud State secured two doubles points as they won two of the three matches. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) and sophomore Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) fell 1-8 to Emily Schellenboom and Catherine Grissom. After starting the year 2-0, the sophomore duo has dropped three straight in the No. 1 spot and sit at 2-3 on the year. Sophomore Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and freshman Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) earned a comfortable 8-4 victory in the No. 2 spot with a win over Tessa Holman and Julia Hooker. In the No. 3 spot, senior Olivia Fredrickson (Fridley, Minn) and sophomore Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) won 7-7, 7-2 in a tiebreaker over Alexis Ganop and Marissa Baker.
Singles
In Singles play, the Huskies were triumphant in five of the six matches. In the No. 1 spot, Grott earned her first singles victory of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Paz Aoki snapped her three-match losing streak with a 7-6, 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot. Muñoz Perez secured a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the No. 3 spot to put the fifth point on the board for the Huskies. Senior Arisa Kashima (Saitama, Japan) grabbed a 7-6, 6-0 win over Alexis Ganop in the No. 4 spot. Brower captured a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 5 spot and has now won three matches in a row and sits at 4-1 in singles play on the year.
