St. Cloud State Softball Closes Regular Season with Series Split Against Wayne State

Huskies will head to NSIC Tournament
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team (31-18, 16-8 NSIC) closed their 2023 regular season with a series split against Wayne State (13-39, 8-21 NSIC) Sunday afternoon at Selke Field. The Huskies fell in a tough battle 5-4 in eight innings in game one while taking game two 7-1 over the Wildcats. The Huskies will head into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament 31-18 overall and 16-8 in league play.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (4) VS WAYNE STATE (5)
The first three innings were held scoreless until St. Cloud State struck first in the fourth. With Sydney Trees posted on third, Raven Vanden Langenberg laid down a beautiful bunt sending Trees across home plate for the 1-0 lead. Wayne State would tie things up at one in the top of the fifth.
Entering the bottom of the fifth, Vanden Langenberg sent a single to right, driving in Holly Weinberger home for a 2-1 lead. Then, Vanden Langenberg would attempt to make it to second, distracting the Wildcats defense allowing Trees to sneak home for a 3-1 Husky lead. Wayne State would tie things up in the sixth before taking a 4-3 lead in the seventh.
With two outs, Josey Marquette stepped up to the plate to make a play. The center fielder blasted a home run through the wind along the left side to tie things up at four sending the game into extra innings. However, Wayne State would strike in the eighth adding a run. The Huskies would be unable to respond in the next at-bat falling 5-4 in game one.
Trinity Junker pitched the entire eight innings striking out six batters with 14 hits, five runs, and two walks. Vanden Langenberg went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Marquette went 1-for-3 with a home run and RBI.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (7) VS WAYNE STATE (1)
It was a 1-1 ballgame until the Huskies added one in the fifth and five in the sixth. Up 2-1 going into the sixth, Sophie Culhane laid down a bunt that would send Jamie Odlum home for the 3-1 lead. Next, Culhane would get caught stealing but would give Lydia Krueger the opportunity to cross home plate to increase the lead to 4-1. After laying down a bunt, Trees stole second base while Marquette stole home plate to put SCSU up 5-1. With Trees on third, Vanden Langenberg threw down a bunt that would push Trees past home for the 6-1 lead. An error on the Wildcats allowed Jasmin Estrada to make it to second while Weinberger crossed home plate putting the Huskies up 7-1.
Emma Eickhoff put in work in the circle for 5.2 innings, striking out six batters while allowing six hits and one run. Justyce Porter came in for relief striking out two while walking one. Weinberger went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Culhane and Vanden Langenberg went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
UP NEXT
The Huskies will continue their season with post-season play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament. The tournament is set for May 3 through May 6 in Rochester, Minn. Time and opponent will be set later tonight.
