Huskies sneak by 4-3 in game one, down CSP 10-3 in game two
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team (21-14, 6-4 NSIC) rebounded back Saturday afternoon for a sweep of Concordia-St. Paul (19-18, 5-7 NSIC). The Huskies snuck past the Golden Bears 4-3 in game one and downed CSP 10-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (4) VS CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL (3)
Concordia-St. Paul struck first in the first inning before the Huskies jumped on top 2-1 in the second. Jamie Odlum reached first on an error while Maggie Fitzgerald was able to take home plate for the Huskies first run. Next Lydia Krueger laid down a sacrifice bunt giving Odlum enough room to make it home for the 2-1 score. CSP tied things up at 2-2 in the second off a single advancing their runners on base. The next few innings would be slow for St. Cloud State as they struggled to generate offense. The Golden Bears jumped ahead 3-2 in the fifth. In the top of the sixth with two outs and bases loaded, the Huskies were looking to take the lead, but a hit resulted in a fielder's choice with the runner out at home to end the inning. SCSU would take the lead in the seventh as Jasmin Estrada blasted a two-run home run over center field giving the Huskies a 4-3 lead. A three-and-out by SCSU's defense would end the game at 4-3.
Odlem went 2-for-4 with two extra base hits. Estrada went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (10) VS CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL (3)
The Huskies struck first in the second as Madison Spah RBI doubled to center field, sending Fitzgerald home for the score. Odlum added another run in the inning for the 2-0 lead off a wild pitch. CSP would cut it to a one-run game adding a run in the bottom of the fourth but that wouldn't last long as the Huskies added three in the top of the fifth. An error by CSP would result in Holly Weinberger making it to second while Sydney Trees scored unearned. Raven Vanden Langenberg RBI doubled to left center for the 4-1 lead. Next Fitzgerald would RBI single to right field for the Huskies 5-1 lead. The Golden Bears would get two back in the fifth making it a 5-3 game.
The sixth inning would be another big inning for SCSU as they added another three runs to their total. Vanden Langenberg singled to short and was able to send Trees and Tenley Quesnell home for the 7-2 lead. A stolen base by Vanden Langenberg positioned her in scoring position where she would score an unearned run while Estrada reached first on an error.
In the seventh, a wild pitch would advance Quesnell to third while Spah took the opportunity to score for the 9-3 lead. Then Weinberger sent a shot along the left side sending Quesnell home for the Huskies tenth run of the game and the 10-3 victory for a sweep of Concordia-St. Paul.
