Estrada Breaks Career Home Run Record, St. Cloud State Softball Continues NSIC Tournament Run
5/4/2023 8:02:00 PM | Softball
ROCHESTER, Minn. - St. Cloud State Softball (33-19, 16-9 NSIC) graduate designated player Jasmin Estrada broke the program's all-time home run record with a deep solo shot to help the Huskies stay alive and advance to the third day of the NSIC Tournament.
Â
Estrada's blast established a new career mark for home runs at 43, passing the legendary Brooke Gentzler's previous mark of 42.
Â
The Huskies opened the second day of the NSIC Tournament with Augustana where they fell just short, 5-4, against the Vikings moving into the elimination bracket. SCSU was able to keep its tournament run alive as the Huskies downed the Dragons 11-3 in five innings.
Â
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (4) VS AUGUSTANA (5)
The Huskies opened raring to go as they knocked down three in the first inning. After a triple by Sydney Trees posted her on third, Raven Vanden Langenberg laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt sending Trees home for the 1-0 lead. An error on the Vikings allowed Vanden Langenberg to reach base. Next up, Jasmin Estrada blasted her 42nd career home run - tying the program's record - with a two-run home run to put the Huskies up 3-0 over the Vikings.
Â
Augustana answered with one of their own in the first to cut the Huskies lead to 3-1. St. Cloud State would be stalled for the next few innings as Augustana added four runs in the fourth to take over the lead 5-3.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, with two runners in scoring position, Lydia Krueger would drive one in with an RBI single to right field, cutting the Vikings lead to 5-4. With one inning left to either take the lead or extend the game, the Huskies were looking to make a play with two down and a runner in scoring position. However, Vanden Langenberg would get out going home to end the game, sending the Huskies to the elimination bracket.
Â
Trinity Junker threw for 3.1 innings with one strikeout with five hits and five runs while Justyce Porter came in for relief for 2.2 innings allowing three hits. Estrada went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a home run, and an extra base hit. Trees went 3-for-4 with two extra base hits.
Â
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (11) VS MSU-MOORHEADÂ (3) - FIVE INNINGS
The Huskies kept their tournament run alive taking down the Dragons 11-3 in five innings off nine hits. Once again, St. Cloud State opened strong in the first thanks to a big three-run home run by Maggie Fitzgerald to put SCSU on the board 3-0. MSU-Moorhead would answer with a three-run home run of their own to tie things up at 3-3.
Â
In the bottom of the third inning, Jasmin Estrada would make history as she became the program's new all-time career home run leader with her 43rd career home run. Estrada's deep solo shot to left center put the Huskies up 4-3.
Â
In the fourth, the Huskies added three more with the help of two errors committed by the Dragons. With the bases loaded, Trees sent up a sacrifice fly that Krueger would tag up on going home for the 5-3 lead. Evy Polsfuss hit a grounder through the infield to bring home Tenley Quesnell and Josey Marquette putting SCSU up 7-3.
Â
The bottom of the fifth is where things would come to a close. A passed ball by the Dragons advanced Jamie Odlum to third and Krueger to second before a single up the middle by Quesnell drove Odlum home for one. Next up, a shot by Gabrielle Nelson brought home Krueger making the score 9-3. With three on, a sacrifice bunt by Vanden Langenberg brought home Quesnell to make it 10-3. Just needing one more to end it, another passed ball by the Dragons gave Josey Marquette enough room to make it home, ending the game 11-3.
Junker pitched for the five innings striking out eight batters while allowing three hits, three runs, and two walks. Estrada went 3-for-3 with an RBI and home run. Fitzgerald went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
