Huskies rally to beat Missouri Western, 5-4, fall short against Northwest Missouri State, 2-1
Sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) continued her strong start to the season, allowing two hits, no runs and no walks in her 4.0 innings over two appearances. She earned a win and recorded four strikeouts while opponents batted just .133 against her.
Senior center fielder Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho), senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) and fifth year right fielder/first baseman Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) led the team with two hits apiece. Krueger, who was already leading the NSIC in number of hit by pitches, added two more, pushing her season total to nine.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 5, MISSOURI WESTERN 4
Offense was limited in the first three innings as both teams combined for just two hits. Then in the top of the fourth, Missouri Western exploded for four runs on four hits including a two-run shot and a solo homerun, giving the Griffons a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies went three up, three down in the bottom half of the inning, but in the bottom of the fifth, they got on the board after a Weinberger single scored junior outfielder/catcher, Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) and Quesnell. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) singled, bringing Krueger home and the Huskies within one run.
After starting the inning prior, Porter made quick work of the top of the sixth, sitting down two batters on strikes as MWSU went three up, three down. In the next half, Holzhueter hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game at four, before the Huskies scored again after a pair of throwing errors, taking their first lead of the afternoon. The Griffons allowed just two hits but committed three errors, allowing SCSU to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs.
After a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, Porter took care of business and got some help from Quesnell, who threw a MWSU runner out at home, preserving the one-run lead.
