St. Cloud State Tennis Travels to Winona for a Pair of Conference Matches

Huskies to play Winona State and Minnesota State Mankato
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-4, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will travel to Winona this weekend as they face off against Winona State (4-5, 0-3 NSIC) on Saturday, March 16 and Minnesota State Mankato (4-4, 2-1 NSIC) on Sunday, March 17. Saturday's match is set for 5:30 P.M. CT and Sunday's match will be played at 3:30 P.M. CT.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State spent spring break in Orlando, Florida and competed against California University of Pennsylvania, Cornerstone University, and Spring Arbor University. The Huskies opened up their match against CUPA by taking a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 2 spot, the junior duo of Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) picked up their fourth win as a pair with a 6-2 victory. Senior Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) and sophomore Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) secured the point for SCSU with a 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot. In need of three points in singles play, junior Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) gave the Huskies one of those points as she picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory for her fourth win of the season. Freshman Lara-Maria Schaefer (Nuremberg, Germany) put the third point on the board for SCSU as she notched a 6-3, 6-2 win for her fifth victory of the season. In what was a tightly contested match, Grott clinched the victory for St. Cloud State with a 7(7)-6(4), 6-3 victory in the No. 4 spot. Freshman Brooklyn Broadwell (Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Brower would also come out victorious in their matches as the Huskies would come away with a 6-1 win.
Results- St. Cloud State 6, California University of Pennsylvania 1

The Huskies would return to action the next day as they took on Cornerstone University. St. Cloud State would again jump out to an early 1-0 after winning two of the three doubles matches. Paz Aoki and Brower picked up their fifth win of the season as they defeated Sara Daza and Hannah De La Vega Sanchez 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. Grott and Molitor would again clinch the doubles point for SCSU with a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 spot. The Huskies would struggle in singles play as they only won one of the six matches with one of them deemed incomplete due to the weather. Muñoz Perez would be the only victorious Husky as she defeated Renata Castillo 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. St. Cloud State would lose the rest of the matches in straight sets as they were defeated 4-2 by Cornerstone.

The final match for the Huskies in the Sunshine State would come against Spring Arbor University. The Cougars would jump out to a quick 1-0 lead after they won all three doubles matches. Needing to win four of the six matches to come out victorious, Brower gave the Huskies their first point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 spot. Muñoz Perez captured a come from behind victory as she defeated Moorea McNally 6(4)-7(7), 6-1, 10-8 in the No. 1 spot. Molitor would tie the match at 3-3 as she took down Andrea Vandermark 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot. The final point would come down to Schaefer and Isabela Abraham in the No. 5 spot. The two players battled in the first set, but Abraham would come away with a 7(7)-6(5) win. Schaefer responded in the second set by winning 6-2. The third and final set was competitive and bounced back-and-forth, but Abraham would ultimately come away with a 10-8 victory as the Cougars defeated the Huskies 4-3.

Saturday's match against Winona State will be the 55th meeting between the programs with the Huskies holding a 39-14 advantage. St. Cloud State has lost eight of the past nine matches against Winona State including their meeting earlier this season.
The Huskies captured the doubles with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The junior pairing of Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower took down Lainy Ristau and Elysia Beynon 6-2. Maria Molitor and Brooklyn Broadwell secured the doubles point for the Huskies as they earned a 7-5 victory over Ally Burger and Miranda Daulong.
Heading into singles play with a 1-0 lead, St. Cloud State would lose three of the next four matches as Winona State took a 3-2 lead. Lara-Maria Schaefer picked up her first collegiate win as she defeated Ally Burger 6-3, 6-0. Now trailing 2-3 in the match, Broadwell earned her first singles victory with a clutch 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elysia Beynon to tie the match at 3-3. The match would be decided in the No. 2 spot where Claudia Muñoz Perez would face off against Skylar Gary. Muñoz Perez took the first set with a 6-3 victory. Gary would bounce back and take the second set 2-6. Gary would maintain her momentum and win the final set 10-6 to secure a 4-3 victory for the Warriors.

Sunday's match against Minnesota State Mankato will be the 77th all-time meeting between the two teams with the Huskies holding a 58-18 advantage in the series. The Mavericks, however, have won five of the past eight meetings including their lone matchup last season.
Last year's match would be one to forget for St. Cloud State as they were defeated in all three doubles matches by a score of 6-1. The Mavericks carried that momentum into singles play as they defeated the Huskies in all six singles matches, all of which coming in straight sets. The Mavericks would sweep SCSU 7-0, which snapped their six-match winning streak.

SCOUTING WINONA STATE
The Warriors come into this match with a 4-6 record and have lost three of their past four matches. In their spring break finale, WSU beat California University of Pennsylvania 4-3. WSU is placed ninth in the NSIC standings in part to their 0-3 conference record with losses to UMary, MSU Moorhead, and MSU Mankato.
Winona State had significant roster turnover in the offseason as Rachel Kelly and Beth Murman both graduated. Kelly and Murman both played at the top of singles and doubles for the Warriors the past three seasons. The 2023-2024 Winona roster consists of one senior, two juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen.
Tom Sanvik enters his third season as the head coach of the Warriors in the 2023-2024 season. Sanvik has posted a record of 29-20 during his tenure with the program. Winona State has reached the NSIC Tournament every year with Sanvik at the helm and finished as the runner up in his inaugural year after losing to Augustana in the championship.

SCOUTING MSU MANKATO
The Mavericks enter this matchup with a 4-4 overall record and 2-1 conference record, placing them fourth in the NSIC standings. The two conference wins consist of a 7-0 victory over MSU Moorhead and a 6-1 victory over Winona State.
Graduate student Chiara Carnelutti has played at the top of the Maverick lineup in both singles and doubles. Carnelutti has a 3-4 record at the No. 1 singles spot and a 2-3 record at the No. 1 doubles spot. Junior Elizabeth Felderman and junior Freia Lawrence are tied for the most singles wins on the team with five apiece. Lawrence has a 5-2 record at the No. 2 singles position while Felderman also has a 5-2 record, but at the No. 5 singles position. Felderman and sophomore McKenna DeMarce are the winningest doubles duo on the Mavericks this season with a 5-2 record.
Tristen Bryant-Otake enters her first season as the Mavericks head coach after serving as a volunteer assistant coach last season. Bryant-Otake played one season for the Mavericks in the 2021-2022 season where she received All-NSIC First Team Singles and All-NSIC First Team Doubles honors.
