St. Cloud State Tennis Falls 3-4 to Spring Arbor in Tightly Contested Match

Huskies comeback attempt comes up short
Orlando, Fla.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-4, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) dropped their second consecutive match as they narrowly fell to Spring Arbor (16-5, 4-4 Crossroads League) 3-4. SCSU was swept in doubles after losing all three matches and nearly completed a comeback after winning three of the six singles matches.
DOUBLES
The Huskies fell into a 0-1 hole after losing all three of the doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, the junior duo of Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) and Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) lost 0-6 to Moorea McNalley and Rebekah Pake. Junior Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) and freshman Lara-Maria Schaefer (Nuremberg, Germany) suffered a 4-6 defeat in the No. 2 spot as the Cougars clinched the doubles point. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) and freshman Brooklyn Broadwell (Thief River Falls, Minn.) were defeated 3-6 by Olivia Creech and Isabel Abraham.
SINGLES
In need of four singles victories to win the match, the Huskies comeback attempt fell short as they were only able to win three matches. In the No. 3 position, Brower put the first point on the board for the Huskies as she had a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory over Creech. In the No. 1 spot, Muñoz Perez produced a come from behind 6(4)-7(7), 6-1,10-8 victory to give the Huskies their second point. Senior Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) would tie the match at 3-3 as she beat Andrea Vandermark 6-3, 6-1. The deciding point would come down to Schaefer and Isabel Abraham in the No. 5 spot. Abraham would take the first set with a 7(7)-6(5) win, but Schaefer responded with a 6-2 victory to send the match to the third set. In what was a back-and-forth third set, Abraham would come out victorious with a 10-8 victory to give the Cougars a 4-3 win over St. Cloud State.

St. Cloud State will return to Minnesota on Saturday, March 16 as they travel to Winona State (3-3, 0-3 NSIC) to take on the Warriors. The match will be played at 5:30 P.M.
