
St. Cloud State Softball Sweeps Final Day at THE Spring Games, Finishes Trip 7-1

Huskies beat Quincy (Ill.) and Clarion (Pa.) on final day in Florida
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – St. Cloud State Softball (16-5, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) defeated Quincy (Ill.) (8-7, 0-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) and Clarion (Pa.) (4-9, 0-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) on Friday to wrap up its appearance at THE Spring Games in Florida. The Huskies took down the Hawks, 9-1, in six innings and the Golden Eagles, 7-2. SCSU is now on a three-game winning streak.
The Huskies outscored their opponents 16-3 and outhit them 24-9. SCSU hit .421 and held Quincy and Clarion to a combined .196. Junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) tossed a complete game against Quincy, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) earned the win against Clarion after pitching a hitless 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Four batters with at least five plate appearances hit above .600. Junior catcher/outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) led the way, going 4-6 with a triple. She scored five times and drove in three runs. Senior outfielder Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho), senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) and freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) all went 3-5 on the day. Krueger drove in two runs and scored three times.
GAME ONE (6 INN.): ST. CLOUD STATE 9, QUINCY 1
St. Cloud State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning after Holzhueter stole home. In the top of the third, the Huskies doubled their lead after a single from fifth-year outfielder/first baseman Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) scored Holzhueter.
SCSU doubled its lead again in the fourth after freshman outfielder Kori Needham (Milan, Ill.) and Krueger each hit RBI singles. Quincy got on board in the bottom of the fifth after Linsey Fischer hit a leadoff triple and scored during the next at bat.
The Huskies scored five runs on five hits in the top of the sixth and held the Hawks scoreless after giving up two hits, ending the game after six innings, 9-1.
Eickhoff went the distance, giving up one run on six hits over 6.0 innings. She struck four out and only walked one.
Top Huskies
SCSU scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Holzhueter led the inning off with a triple and was hit home by Krueger during the next at bat. Redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Needham each knocked in one more run to put the Huskies up 3-0.
Clarion responded in the top of the fourth with a 2-RBI single to cut its deficit to one. SCSU scored three more in the home half of the inning to push its lead back to four runs. A Weinberger RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth gave the Huskies their final run of the game as they went on to win 7-2.
Porter earned the win after pitching 3.2 hitless innings to close out the game. She struck out two and issued two walks.
Top Huskies
The Huskies travel south next weekend to play five games. They play a single game against Missouri Southern on Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m. in Joplin, Mo. before playing a pair of doubleheaders. SCSU plays Central Oklahoma on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. and noon in Pittsburg, Kan., before returning to Joplin to play Nebraska Kearney on Sunday, March 17 at 10 a.m. and noon.

- Krueger recorded her third multi-hit game of the season. She was hit by a pitch for the 15th time this season and 35th time of her career.
- Weinberger tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season and 100th career RBI.
- Buss and Harms recorded their first collegiate hits.
- Needed posted her fifth hit and scored her fifth run of the season.
