St. Cloud State Softball Swept by Minnesota State

Huskies drop pair in first games of 2024 at Selke Field
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (23-19, 6-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) was swept by Minnesota State (34-10, 14-4 NSIC) on Saturday in its first two games at Selke Field this season, 7-1 and 10-5.
GAME ONE: MINNESOTA STATE 7, ST. CLOUD STATE 1
Minnesota State plated three runs on three hits with a Husky error, capped off with a two-run home run to left center field, in the top of the first inning. Junior first baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) got the Huskies on the board in the home half of the first with a sacrifice fly that scored junior catcher Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.).
Neither team recorded a hit in the second or third inning. The only baserunner from the second through the fifth inning came after an MSU single in the top of the fourth. The Mavericks offense got back into a groove, scoring twice on three hits in both the sixth and seventh inning to run away with the game. The Huskies put three runners on base in the seventh inning, but were unable to score any, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

The Huskies opened game two strong and left the first inning with a 2-0 lead after Fitzgerald hit a two-RBI single to right center field, scoring Holzhueter and freshman designated player Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.). Freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) hit an RBI-single in the third to score Fitzgerald and stretch the Huskies lead to three.
MSU and SCSU each put a run on the board in the fifth inning. Redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) drove Fitzgerald in with an RBI-single. The Mavericks feasted on two SCSU errors during the top of the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Holzhueter tied the Huskies back, hitting an RBI-single to right center field.
Minnesota State scored five runs on five hits during a two-out rally in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Huskies, taking a 10-5 lead. After a lead-off single, SCSU grounded into a double play before popping out to end the game.

- Junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) surpassed 115.0 innings on the season and 275.0 for her career. She struck five out, setting a new single season best mark for strikeouts (74) and picked up her 205th career strikeout.
