Huskies pick third conference sweep of 2024
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (25-19, 8-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) swept Sioux Falls (16-25, 7-13 NSIC) Sunday afternoon at Selke Field in St. Cloud. The Huskies took game one, 5-2 and game two, 7-4.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 5, SIOUX FALLS 2
St. Cloud State jumped out to an early 2-0 first inning lead after a single from fifth year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) scored junior catcher Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) and junior first baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Weinberger. Sioux Falls wasted no time responding, scoring two runs in the next half inning, knotting the game at two.
Neither team was able to plate another run until the Huskies brought three runs home in the bottom of the sixth to take a three-run lead. Freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) opened the sixth with a single and redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) followed it up with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter, senior Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.) reached on a fielder's choice after laying down a bunt and the Cougars attempt to get Holmes out at home was unsuccessful. Two batters later, Holzhueter reached on an error as pinch runner, freshman outfielder Hannah Harms (Bartlett, Ill.) and Frechette scored to give the Huskies a 5-2 lead.
