St. Cloud State Softball Fends Off Golden Eagles to Secure Midweek Sweep

Huskies outscore UMC 10-3 in the doubleheader
CROOKSTON, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (22-12, 5-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) got back in the win column in Crookston on Tuesday, picking up a sweep over Minnesota Crookston (8-24, 1-7 NSIC), 7-1 and 3-2.
Junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) and sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) dominated the circle for the Huskies, posting ERAs of 1.91 and 1.05 respectively. Eickhoff started both games and picked up a pair of wins. She only allowed two runs over 7.1 innings and tallied six strikeouts while not issuing a single walk. Porter only allowed one run in 6.2 innings of relief work, earning one save. She struck five batters and walked one. UMC hit just .174 (4-for-23) against her.
Freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) and junior left fielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) each tallied three hits in seven at-bats. Holmes hit a home run and drove in three runs while Holzhueter hit a double and scored twice. Junior third baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Law, Ill.) and freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) each added a home run of their own. Fitzgerald also hit a double and drove in three runs during the twinbill.
Despite both teams batting an identical .264 (14-for-53), the Huskies outscored UMC 10-3 in the pair. SCSU earned nine walks compared the Golden Eagles' one, but struck out five more times (16-11).
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 7, MINNESOTA CROOKSTON 1
SCSU picked up a pair of early runs in the top of the first inning after Holmes hit a two-RBI to bring in redshirt freshman second baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Fitzgerald and tacked on one more after Weiss sent a solo home run over the center field wall, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the home half of the third inning to cut into the SCSU lead. The Huskies responded with a six hit, four run fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. Holzhueter and fifth year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) hit back-to-back singles before Fitzgerald cleared the bases with a three-run home run. Frechette and Holmes each hit singles to left field before junior utility Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn.) hit an RBI-single to center field, bringing in Frechette.
Eickhoff earned the win after providing a quality start. She scattered three hits over 4.0 innings. She recorded four strikeouts and only allowed one run. Porter tossed 3.0 scoreless relief innings. She only allowed one hit and struck out four.
Top Huskies
The Huskies a first inning lead again after Weiss drove in Holzhueter who hit a double to center field in the games first at-bat. SCSU doubled its lead in the next inning after Holmes delivered a solo home run to open the top of the second inning.
UMC scored its first run of the game after putting together a three-hit third inning but left two runners on base. The Huskies went three up, three down in the fourth and fifth innings but Frechette hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) who was pinch running for Fitzgerald who walked earlier in the inning. The Golden Eagles made it a one-run game after scoring one in the bottom of the sixth and had another opportunity to tie the game or take the lead but again left two runners stranded.
In the top of the seventh, the Huskies had the opportunity to add some insurance runs but ended up leaving two on the bases. After a leadoff walk to start the home half of the seventh, Porter recorded outs in the next three at-bats to close the game out.

The Huskies finish their busy week with two more road conference doubleheaders this weekend. On Friday, SCSU will travel to Roseville to play Concordia-St. Paul (26-6, 8-0 NSIC) at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Reynolds Field (on the campus of Northwestern University, St. Paul) and Marshall on Saturday to play Southwest Minnesota State (13-18, 4-4 NSIC) at 1 and 3 p.m. Links to each coverage option will be available on the SCSU Softball schedule page.
