Huskies swept by NSIC-leading Concordia-St.Paul
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (22-14, 5-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell to the top team in the NSIC, Concordia-St. Paul (28-6, 10-0 NSIC) in both games of its doubleheader on Friday at Reynolds field on the campus of Northwestern-St. Paul.
CSP lead the double header in runs (15-12), hits (27-16), doubles (11-5) and strikeouts (11-8). SCSU lead in home runs (3-0) and stolen bases (4-0). Each team earned eight walks.
GAME ONE: CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL 3, ST. CLOUD STATE 1
The Golden Bears got into the scorebook first after an RBI-double down the left field line, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. CSP had an opportunity to do more damage, but left the bases loaded. SCSU responded in the next half inning, tying the game at one after an RBI single off the bat of fifth year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) scored freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.). CSP regained the lead in the home half of the fourth inning after a 2-RBI double and held on to win 3-1.

In a game with 23 runs scored, neither team was able to get on the board until the fourth. CSP struck first again after a sacrifice fly to center field. SCSU got on the board and tied the game in the next half inning when Needham delivered a sacrifice fly but left more runs on basepaths, leaving the bases loaded.
The games back-and-forth nature continued in the fifth inning. The Golden Bears plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth before SCSU responded with four of its own in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Holmes hit a three-run home run and senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) hit an RBI-double to drive in the fourth run of the inning. CSP responded with a five run effort in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead and eventually extend it to four runs.
With their backs against the walls in the top of the seventh inning, needing four runs to extend the game, that's exactly what the Huskies got from their offense. Junior first baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Law, Ill.) capped off an 11 pitch at bat with a three-run home run over the wall in right center field, to bring SCSU within one run. Krueger's second hit of the game, an RBI-single, was a big one, as it brought in the game tying run. The Huskies had runners on second and third but were unable to take the lead.
Neither team was able to score in the first two extra innings, but the Huskies were able to breakthrough in the top of the tenth, scoring on a sacrifice bunt that was laid down by freshman outfielder Bree Beck (Lakeville, Minn.) and a solo home run by Holzhueter during the next at-bat to take an 11-9 lead into the bottom of the inning. CSP was able to string together a trio of hits that scored runs to escape with a 12-11 victory.
