St. Cloud State Tennis Set to Host Minnesota Morris Before Traveling to Florida for Spring Break

Huskies look to snap three-game losing streak
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (1-3, 0-2 NSIC) is set to host Minnesota Morris on Thursday, February 27 before flying out to Orlando, Fla. to take on California University of Pennsylvania on Monday, March 3, Cedarville University on Tuesday, March 4, and then Concordia College on Thursday, March 6. Thursday's game against Minnesota Morris is set for 4:30 p.m. while the March 3 and 6 matches will be played at 8:00 a.m. and the March 4 match is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Last Time Out
St. Cloud State opened up their conference schedule this past weekend as they played Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
Minnesota Crookston would take the first match at the No. 1 spot as Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Ariadna Solis Guals defeated Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower 6-3. The Huskies would take the next match as Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schafer came away with a 6-3 win of their own. The Golden Eagles would clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
With a 1-0 lead, Crookston came away with all six wins in singles play, five of which in straight sets to sweep the Huskies. Lara-Maria Schafer was the lone Husky to win a set, but she would be defeated 3-6, 6-4, 5-10 in the No. 5 spot.

In doubles play against Bemidji State, the Beavers came up victorious in the first match with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer responded with a 6-1 victory of their own. To clinch the point for SCSU, Gibby Chapman and Brooklyn Broadwell captured a 6-4 win as the Huskies took a 1-0 lead.
Moving into singles play, the Beavers took the lead following straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 spots. Schaefer came up with her own straight set victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 4 spot as SCSU trailed 3-2. Muñoz Perez battled into the third set against Sophie Groen in the No. 1 spot, but would be defeated 6-0, 1-6, 3-6 as BSU clinched the match. Chapman captured a 6-3, 6-2 win in her match at the No. 6 spot to finalize the score at 4-3.

Jerry Anderson
Thursday's match against Minnesota Morris will be the sixth annual Jerry Anderson Legacy Match. Jerry Anderson served as the men's and women's tennis coach from 1998 until he passed away in September of 2018. Anderson put together a record of 198-136 in his 14 seasons with the program and is second all-time in total wins in program history. Anderson also captured two NSIC titles as they came in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010. In the 2009 season, Anderson set the program record for single-season victories with 26 and was awarded NSIC Coach of the Year for his efforts. St. Cloud State hosted the opening round of the NCAA Tournament that same season. The 2010 season was also historic for Anderson and the Huskies. The team finished with a 23-7 record in route to winning their second consecutive conference championship as well as earning a second straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. St. Cloud State captured a 5-0 win over Colorado Mesa State in the NCAA Tournament before falling 3-5 to Slippery Rock in the Sweet 16. A 1984 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Anderson was a member of the St. Cloud State University tennis team from 1982-1984. He served as a team captain during his senior campaign in 1984. At Willmar Community College, Anderson earned All-Region 13 honors and a trip to the NCAA national championships in 1981. A graduate of Dassel-Cokato High School, Anderson was honored with induction to the Dassel-Cokato Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. In addition to his duties as tennis coach at St. Cloud State, Anderson worked on campus since 1985 and most recently served as a director in the University's Academic Advising Department. Anderson's impact extends far past the boundaries of the tennis court as his passion for St. Cloud State and the community was greatly felt by players, faculty, and colleagues.

Thursday's match against Minnesota Morris will be the 15th meeting between the teams with the series tied at 7-7. St. Cloud State has won the past seven matches with the latest win coming in 2022 where the Huskies swept the Cougars 7-0.

The March 4 match against California University of Pennsylvania will fifth all-time meeting with the series tied at 2-2. The Huskies have won the past two matchups including last years match in Florida.

The Huskies would drop the first doubles match as Claudia Munoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer were defeated 2-6 in the No. 1 position. In need of back-to-back victories, the duo of Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki picked up the first win as they beat Diletta Maria Mungo and Lilli Schreiber 6-2 in the No. 2 position. The clinching match would come down to Maria Molitor and Oriana Grott The duo would take on Carmen Duran and Bega Gotor in the No. 3 position. Molitor and Grott would come out victorious as they won the match 6-3 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Moving into singles play, Muñoz Perez got the Huskies started with a clean 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot. Schaefer followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 spot as the Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the match. In the No. 4 spot, Grott clinched the match for St. Cloud State as she put the winning point on the board with a 7(7)-6(4), 6-3 victory over Maria Del Mar Ojeda. Brooklyn Broadwell produced a come from behind 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 spot to put the fifth point on the board for the Huskies. Brower gave SCSU their final point as she defeated Lilli Schreiber 7(7) 6(4), 7-5 in the No. 3 spot as St. Cloud State came out victorious with a 6-1 win.
