St. Cloud State Tennis to Host Two Conference Opponents this Weekend

Huskies to Play Winona State and Mankato at Sta-Fit
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-5, 0-2 NSIC) return to action this weekend as they host Winona State on Friday, March 21 and then Minnesota State Mankato on Sunday, March 23. Friday's game is set for 4:30 p.m. while Sunday's game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
St. Cloud State traveled to Florida two weeks ago for their spring break trip where they took on California University of Pennsylvania, Cedarville University, and Concordia College.

In doubles play against California University of Pennsylvania, St. Cloud State won the point after taking two of the three matches. The Vulcans would take the first match with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Lara-Maria Schaefer and Gibby Chapman came away with a 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot as each team now held a doubles win. Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell came up big for SCSU in the No. 3 spot with a 6-4 as the Huskies took the doubles point.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, CUPA won the first three matches in straight sets as they now held a 3-1 lead. Schaefer and Broadwell each battled into the third set of their respective matches, but would come up short as the Vulcans now led 5-1. Chapman captured a third set victory in the No. 6 spot, but the Huskies would ultimately be defeated 5-2.

For the third consecutive match, the Huskies captured the doubles point with two wins against Cedarville. At the No. 1 spot, the Yellowjackets took the point with a 6-2 win, but Lara-Maria Schaefer and Gibby Chapman responded with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. In need of a win in the No. 3 spot to take the point, Brooklyn Broadwell and Oriana Grott came out victorious with a 6-4 win to secure the point for SCSU.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, the Yellowjackets took the first two matches in the No. 1 spot to tie the match at 1-1. In the No. 6 spot, Chapman gave the Huskies their first singles with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory as St. Cloud State retook the lead. Cedarville captured victories in the No. 3 and No. 2 spots to put them on the cusp of victory with a 3-2 lead. Schaefer would tie the match in the No.4 spot with a 6-4 7(7)-6(4) victory over Susannah Prince. With the match tied 3-3, it would come down to Broadwell and Faith Monson in the No. 5 spot. Broadwell took the first set 6-4, but Monson countered with her own 6-4 victory in set two. Heading into set three, Monson came away with the victory, beating Broadwell 10-4 in the third set as Cedarville took the match 4-3.

At the No. 1 spot, the Cobbers took the point with a 7-5 win, but Lara-Maria Schaefer and Gibby Chapman responded with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. In need of a win in the No. 3 spot to take the point, Brooklyn Broadwell and Oriana Grott came out victorious with a clean 6-0 win to secure the point for SCSU.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Concordia took the first two matches as they now held a 2-1 lead. Broadwell got the Huskies back on track with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot. At the No. 4 spot, Schaefer added on another straight set wins as SCSU retook the lead at 3-2. To clinch the match, Chapman came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot for her fifth straight win. Grott put the finishing touches on the match for St. Cloud State as a straight set win finalized the score at 5-2.

Following the Huskies spring break trip, freshman Gibby Chapman was named NSIC Player of the Week. Chapman went 3-0 in doubles and has won five consecutive doubles matches. She also went 3-0 in singles and has also won five consecutive singles matches.

Muñoz Perez and Schaefer each picked up a straight set victory as the final score would come out to be 4-3.

SCSU dropped the doubles point after being defeated in two of the three matches. In the No. 1 spot, Claudia Munoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer were defeated 6-2 by Freia Lawrence and Avery Stilwell. The Mavericks would clinch the doubles point as Elizabeth Felderman and McKenna DeMarce defeated Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki in the No. 2 spot. Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell captured a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot.
