St. Cloud State Softball Splits First Northern Sun Series with Winona State

Huskies drop game one, 2-1, earn 7-6 comeback win in game two
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (22-8, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its conference opening doubleheader against Winona State on Saturday at the Husky Dome. The Huskies fell in game one, 2-1, before responding with a 7-6 come from behind victory in the second game.
GAME ONE: WINONA STATE 2, ST. CLOUD STATE 1
The Warriors (22-7, 3-1 NSIC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half inning after a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single. SCSU recorded its lone hit in the game in the bottom of the fifth when freshman infielder Grace Dahmen (Jordan, Minn.) recorded a leadoff triple. Redshirt sophomore infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) drove Dahmen in during the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly, to cut the Huskies deficit to one. SCSU went three up, three down in the sixth and after a two-out walk, the game ended on a failed stolen base attempt at second.
TOP HUSKIES
Just like the first game, WSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, this time after back-to-back RBI singles. The Warriors then doubled their lead in the third after an RBI-double and an RBI-single and added one more run after a leadoff solo home run to start the fourth inning.
SCSU finally got in the scoresheet with four runs in the home half of the fifth. Frechette drove in the first run with an RBI-triple and senior utility Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn.) followed that up with an RBI-single in the next Huskies at-bat. Freshman catcher Morgan Honeycutt (Rosemount, Minn.) drove in the third and fourth SCSU runs with a two-run blast over the wall in left-center field.
The Warriors responded, adding another run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead back to two, but SCSU knotted the game at six in the next half inning after redshirt freshman utility Kaylee Collins (Lakeville, Minn.) hit a 2-RBI double.
The Huskies earned a leadoff walk to start the home half of the sixth inning and senior catcher/outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt in the next at-bat. A couple of batters later, Fitzgerald hit an RBI-single, driving in what would become the winning run.

The Huskies return to action on Wednesday for its first midweek conference doubleheader of the season when they welcome Minnesota Crookston to St. Cloud and the Husky Dome.
