St. Cloud State Tennis Faceoff Against UMary and MSU Moorhead in Duluth for Weekend Matches

Huskies look to snap two-game skid
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-7, 0-4 NSIC) travel to Duluth, Minn. this weekend as they take on UMary on Saturday, March 29 and MSU Moorhead on Sunday, March 30. Saturday's match is set for 11:30 a.m. while Sunday's match will be played at 9:30 a.m.

This past weekend, St. Cloud State hosted Winona State and Minnesota State.

Against Winona State on Friday, St. Cloud State got off to a strong start with as Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer captured a 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. Winona State responded with a 6-2 win of their own in the No. 1 spot. To decide the doubles point, Gibby Chapman and Brooklyn Broadwell came up big for the Huskies with a 6-4 win. This was the fifth consecutive match that St. Cloud State has won the doubles point.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Johana Brower extended the lead with a clean 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot. The Warriors came up with their first point of the day in the No. 5 spot as the match was set at 2-1. In the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott gave the Huskies their third point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Winona State would ultimately tie the match with two third set victories in the No. 1 and No. 4 spots as the score now tallied to 3-3. With the match on the line, Broadwell faced off against Nikita Agrawal in the No. 6 position. In what was a tight match, Agrawal would ultimately come away with a 6-5, 7-5 win as Winona State came away with a 4-3 victory.

Against Minnesota State on Sunday, the Huskies had their five-match streak of taking the doubles point snap after falling in two of the three matches. The Mavericks captured victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Gibby Chapman and Brooklyn Broadwell came away with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot for SCSU.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, St. Cloud State dropped matches in the No. 5, No. 3, and No. 2 spots as Mankato clinched the win in the match. The Mavericks completed the sweep with three more straight set victories as they went on to win 7-0.

In the No.1 position, Claudia Muñoz Perez and Maria Paz Aoki were defeated 6-1 by Chloe Chong and Ilona Freitag. UMary clinched the point after Hala Awad and Maria Estinvil defeated Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell 6-2. Emily Needham and Luba Moyo completed the sweep as they captured a 6-4 victory over seniors Maria Molitor and Mamiko Yamaguchi.
UMary made quick work of the Huskies after earning victories in the first five matches. Grott and Broadwell both won the first set in their respective matches but were both defeated in the third set. Yamaguchi gave the Huskies their only point of the day as she defeated Luba Moyo 7(8)-6(6), 6-3 in the No. 6 spot, but UMary would walk away with a 6-1 match victory.

In the No. 1 position, the duo of Maria Paz Aoki and Claudia Muñoz Perez were defeated 6-2. Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell tied up the match with a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 spot. In what was a back-and-forth match, Maria Molitor and Mamiko Yamaguchi were defeated 7(8)-6(6) by Katryna Hansen and Claire Nemmers as the Dragons clinched the doubles point.

Paz Aoki battled in the No. 2 spot, but was ultimately defeated 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 by Shaelyn Johnson as the Dragons clinched the victory. Yamaguchi put the final point on the board for the Huskies as she earned a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 6 position as St. Cloud State was defeated 4-3.
