St. Cloud State Tennis Hosts Minnesota Duluth in Final Home Game of the Season

Saturday’s match will serve as Senior Day for the Huskies
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-9, 0-6 NSIC) will host Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, April 5 for their final home match of the season at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center. Saturday's match will be played at 12:30 p.m. and serve as Senior Day.
Last Time Out
St. Cloud State traveled to Duluth this past weekend as they faced-off against UMary and MSU Moorhead.
UMary came up with the first win of the day with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, but Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell captured their own 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. With each team holding a doubles win, the deciding point would come down to Johana Brower & Gibby Chapman against Maria Estinvil & Anna Sueflohn of UMary. The Marauders came up with a 6-3 victory as they clinched the doubles point.
Moving into singles play trailing 1-0, St. Cloud State would be defeated in the first three matches in straight sets at the No. 5, No. 1, and No. 3 spots as UMary secured the victory. Brower battled back and forth in the No. 2 spot, but was ultimately defeated 6-2, 2-6, 4-6. Lara-Maria Schaefer had her own battle in the No. 4 spot and came out victorious with a third set victory to give the Huskies their first point of the match. Broadwell tacked on her own third set victory in the No. 6 spot to set the final score at 5-2.

The Huskies got off to a strong start in doubles play as Brooklyn Broadwell and Oriana Grott captured a 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot. The Dragons came away with a victory in the No. 1 position as the doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot. In what was a tightly contested match, Gibby Chapman and Johana Brower came away with a 7-5 victory as St. Cloud State secured the doubles point.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, SCSU would be defeated in the first three singles matches as MSUM now held a 3-1 lead. Lara-Maria Schaefer came up with a big straight set victory in the No. 4 spot as the Huskies now trailed 3-2. In the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott battled back and forth with Katryna Hansen, but would fall in the third set as the Dragons clinched the match. Broadwell added on a straight set victory to finalize the score at 4-3.

Following a 2-0 doubles weekend, Brooklyn Broadwell won her 8th and 9th consecutive doubles matches which is tied for the second longest doubles winning streak by an individual since 2008. Broadwell is now tied with Kristie Eull (2009), Tanya Halloran (2009), Kayla Lenz (2009), Samantha Boushek (2010, Jacquelyn Doll (2010), and Katie Kotschevar (2011) who all held a nine-match doubles winning streak. Kelly Freese (2008) holds the longest streak with 10 consecutive doubles matches won. Broadwell's 10 doubles wins on the year are also the most by any player in a single season since 2019.

Saturday's match against Minnesota Duluth will serve as Senior Day for the Huskies. Seniors Johana Brower, Claudia Muñoz Perez, and Maria Paz Aoki will be honored along with hitting partner Tomiwa Ajayi. Brower, Muñoz Perez, and Paz Aoki have all played over 100 career matches for St. Cloud State. Brower has played 119 career matches while earning Academic All-NSIC honors in 2024. In her sophomore year, Brower tallied a 12 match singles winning streak. Only six other players have had a streak of 12+ games. Muñoz Perez has played in 119 career matches while earning NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence in 2023 and 2024. She also received the Myles Brand award this year and earned CSC Academic All-District honors in 2024. In 2022, Muñoz Perez earned an NSIC All-Conference Singles Selection after going 15-3. Paz Aoki has played in 120 career matches.

Saturday's match against Minnesota Duluth will be the 76th meeting between the programs with St. Cloud State holding a 57-18 record. The Huskies have won two of the past three against the Bulldogs including last year's meeting.
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point with a sweep of all three matches. In the No. 3 spot, Maria Molitor and Oriana Grott gave SCSU their first victory of the day with a 6-2 win over Olivia Honsey and Courtney Eppen. Claudia Muñoz Perez and Brooklyn Broadwell clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot. The duo of Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in the No. 1 spot to give SCSU a 1-0 lead.

Despite the newly found momentum for the Bulldogs, Molitor put the match clinching point on the board for the Huskies with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brynne Folden in the No. 6 spot. Broadwell put the cherry on top with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 5 spot as St. Cloud State came out victorious with a 5-2 win, snapping their four-match losing streak.

The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs come into this match holding a 4-9 record with an 0-6 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs have lost six consecutive matches. Coming into this season, UMD was projected to finish 10th in the NSIC after going 2-10 with a 1-8 conference record.
