
St. Cloud State Softball Offense Explodes for 19 Runs on 28 Hits in Midweek Sweep of Minnesota Duluth

Huskies take down UMD 6-4 in game one, 13-4 in game two
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 6, MINNESOTA DULUTH 4
UMD took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after a sacrifice fly, but the Huskies responded with three runs of their own in the next half inning after RBI doubles from senior infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and junior infielder Sydney Roe (Davenport, Iowa) and an RBI triple from sophomore catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.).
The Bulldogs tied the game at three the next half inning and there was not another score change until the top of the sixth when SCSU took a two-run lead after RBI singles from Fitzgerald and sophomore infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.). Weiss added an insurance run in the seventh, extending the Huskies lead to three after a leadoff solo home run. UMD cut its deficit to two and had the bases loaded but were unable to finish off the rally in the last half inning.

SCSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI-single from Holzhueter and added three more runs in the third to extend its lead to four after an RBI-single from Weiss and a 2-RBI from graduate infielder Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.).
The Huskies added five more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Weiss hit a two-RBI single, freshman catcher Morgan Honeycutt (Rosemount, Minn.) hit a two-RBI double and sophomore outfielder Bree Beck (Lakeville, Minn.) hit an RBI-triple. UMD responded with four runs in the next half inning.
St. Cloud State ended the game with two more runs in the sixth and seventh inning. In the seventh, Roe hit an RBI-triple and Honeycutt hit an RBI-single.

SCSU finishes a six-game road trip next weekend at Sioux Falls (21-17, 9-7 NSIC) and Minnesota State (30-12, 14-2 NSIC). The games on Saturday at USF are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. at Bowden Field (Augustana) in Sioux Falls and the doubleheader on Sunday at MSU are slated for noon and 2 p.m. from The Diamond in Mankato.
