St. Cloud State Tennis Opens Conference Play with Matches Against Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth

Huskies eye first win
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Tennis (0-2, 0-0 NSIC) open conference play this weekend as they travel to Duluth, Minnesota to take on Bemidji State on Saturday, February 14 and then Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, February 15. Saturday's match will be played at 5:30 p.m. while Sunday's match will start at 1:00 p.m.

St. Cloud State traveled to Rogers, MN this past weekend as they took on Bethel.
Huskies Fall 5-2 to Bethel- February 6, 2026
Bethel would come away with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot, but the Huskies responded with a 6-1 win of their own by Gibby Chapman and Margarita Vinichenko. To decide the doubles point, Brooklyn Broadwell and Hannah Oing would be defeated 6-3.
Moving into singles play, BU opened with a win in the No. 6 spot. Broadwell would capture a straight set win in the No. 5 spot to set the score at 2-1. The Royals would ultimately clinch the match after rattling off three straight wins, all in straight sets. Chapman would battle back and forth in the No. 4 spot. After dropping the first set 6-0, she would win the next two sets 6-4 6-4 to finalize the score at 5-2.

Coming into this season, St. Cloud State was projected to finish 10th in the NSIC.
Head Coach Berit Merrill enters her eighth season with the Huskies ahead of the 2026 season. Merrill and the Huskies are coming off a 2025 season where they tallied a 4-11 record and a 1-8 mark in the NSIC.
"I am excited for this season as we have a great mix of newcomers and returners and it will be great to see how they come together as a team and compete," said Merrill.
Sánchez Mendivil enters her first season with the Huskies as a freshman.
"Lili has an incredibly strong work ethic along with her ability to keep a calm headspace on the court makes her a great candidate for our player to watch this season," said Merrill.
St. Cloud State will be returning three players from last years roster to this season in juniors Brooklyn Broadwell and Lara-Maria Schaefer and sophomore Gibby Chapman. Broadwell compiled a 16-14 overall record with an 11-4 mark in doubles play, which was a team-high in doubles wins. Highlighted in her 11 doubles wins was a 10-match winning streak which was the second longest doubles win streak since 2007. Schaefer led the team in total wins last season with 17 and singles wins with 9. She posted a 17-13 overall record last year. Chapman notched a 15-12 overall record with a 9-5 mark in doubles play. She was named NSIC Player of the Week following a 6-0 week across the Huskies annual Florida trip.
Rounding out the roster will be Hannah Oing and Margarita Vinichenko. Oing is a transfer from St. Thomas University and Vinichenko is a freshman.
Preseason Coaches' Poll Results
Saturday's match against Bemidji State will be the 55th all-time match between the Huskies and Beavers. St. Cloud State leads the series 46-8, but lost the lone matchup last season.

In doubles play, the Beavers came up victorious in the first match with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer responded with a 6-1 victory of their own. To clinch the point for SCSU, Gibby Chapman and Brooklyn Broadwell captured a 6-4 win as the Huskies took a 1-0 lead.
Moving into singles play, the Beavers took the lead following straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 spots. Schaefer came up with her own straight set victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 4 spot as SCSU trailed 3-2. Muñoz Perez battled into the third set against Sophie Groen in the No. 1 spot, but would be defeated 6-0, 1-6, 3-6 as BSU clinched the match. Chapman captured a 6-3, 6-2 win in her match at the No. 6 spot to finalize the score at 4-3.

SCSU got off to a strong start as they swept the Bulldogs in doubles. Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer came up with a clean 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot to give the Huskies their first win of the day. Brooklyn Broadwell and Gibby Chapman followed that up with a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot as St. Cloud State clinched the doubles point. Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki completed the sweep for the Huskies with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot.
Moving into singles play holding a 1-0 lead, St. Cloud State kept it rolling as Schaefer, Muñoz Perez, and Oriana Grott all captured straight set singles wins to clinch the match for SCSU.
