SCSU Softball Opens Season at Desert Stinger, Split in First Day Action

Las Vegas, Nev. – The St. Cloud State University softball team opened the 2013 season at the Desert Stinger with a 2-1 loss to Azusa Pacific and evened their record with an 11-3 win over Black Hills State on Friday night.
Azusa Pacific 2, SCSU 1 Game Recap
Senior catcher Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) started the season with a bang, as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth for the only Husky run.
Azusa Pacific scored two runs on one hit in the top of the sixth to take the lead.
The Huskies had five hits in the game and Hogan finished two-for-three at the plate. First year center fielder Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) also went two-for three for the Huskies. Senior shortstop Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) had a hit.
Sophomore pitcher Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) pitched a complete game, giving up two hits, striking out eight batters and walking two.
SCSU 11, Black Hills State 3
St. Cloud State broke open a one-run game with a seven run seventh inning. The highlight of the inning was a three-run home run by junior left fielder Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.)
Hogan finished the day with five hits and she was three-for-three with three runs scored and an rbi. Sophomore first base player Kelsie Fitch (Carver) was three for four.
Franks collected the win throwing 5.2 innings and striking out ten players. The Huskies had 13 hits in the game.
