Softball Drops Two to Minnesota Duluth

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The Huskies opened up conference action this afternoon as they faced Minnesota Duluth in a doubleheader. The games were scheduled to take place in Duluth but had to be played in the Husky Dome due to weather conditions.
St. Cloud State fell to the Bulldogs 0-1 in game one and were defeated 4-9 in game two.
The Huskies are now 15-14 overall and will resume conference action on April 4 as they host a doubleheader against MSU Moorhead scheduled to be played in the dome at 2 and 4 p.m.
Game One vs. Duluth Recap:
Duluth combined for one run on three hits to defeat St. Cloud State 0-1. The Huskies were unable to put a run on the board as they combined for just two total hits in the game.
Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) and Kelsie Fitch (Carver) each posted one hit for the Huskies.
Kelly Franks (Steven's Point) pitched the complete game. Franks allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked seven. Franks now holds an 11-7 record on the year.
Game Two vs. Duluth Recap:
Both teams got their offense going in game two. Duluth got on the board early as they scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. St. Cloud State battled back in the top of the third on a Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) base hit followed up by a Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) home run over the center field fence. Thomas's two-run homer put the score at 2-5 heading into the bottom of the third. Two scoreless innings ensued until the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldogs unleashed yet again. This time they managed to collect four runs on three hits and one Husky error to go ahead 9-2.
The Huskies battled in the top of the seventh to stay alive. Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) singled to lead off the inning. Canova reached on an error by first base and both runners were driven in by a Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) bases-clearing hit to left center. With the score now standing at 4-9, the Huskies were unable to produce more runs and the Bulldogs retired the inning with two runners left on base.
The Huskies combined for four runs on nine hits and two errors while the Bulldogs finished with nine runs on eight hits and two errors.
Kelsie Fitch, Megan Lehnen and Taylor Thomas each finished with two hits in game two. Thomas and Hogan each drove in two runs.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started on the mound for the Huskies. She threw four innings before being relieved by Kelly Franks. Merrit now holds a 4-7 record this season.
