Winter Haven, Florida – The St. Cloud State University softball team competed in their final day at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, March 17. The Huskies took on Caldwell College (6-1 overall) and fell in a seventh inning battle, 5-6. St. Cloud State was scheduled to match-up against the University of New Haven in game two, but a rain and lightning delay has stalled action in the middle of the third.
The Huskies drop to 4-7 overall on the season and finish with a 2-5 record at the Rebel Spring Games.
SCSU vs. Caldwell Recap:
Today's action against Caldwell was a battle to the finish. St. Cloud State got their offense going early, scoring in the bottom of the first as Tricia DeBoer (Blooming Prairie) doubled to center field and was brought home with an RBI double by Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.).
Caldwell scored three runs off of two hits in the top of four to take a 3-1 lead, before the Huskies added two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 3-3 with hits by Emma Hodges (Munster, Indiana), Canova and Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.).
In the bottom of the fifth, St. Cloud State grabbed two additional runs to take a 5-3 lead courtesy of base hits by Megan Larkin (Winchester, Oregon), Abby Bunnell (Maple Grove) and Canova.
The Huskies couldn't seem to put a stop to Caldwell's offensive run down the stretch, allowing them to score two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to go ahead 6-5 in final scoring.
The Huskies scored five runs off of 10 hits and committed one defensive error. Breana Canova led the way going four for four at the plate with two RBI's. Megan Larkin finished with two hits.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings to give up seven hits and strike out seven. Franks was relieved by Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) for 1.1 innings before returning to the mound to close out the game. Franks was credited with the loss.
St. Cloud State will return to action on March 21 through 23 as they travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to compete in the Missouri Western Invite.
