Track & Field Heads to NSIC Championships, May 9-10

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State track and field is gearing up for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships that will take place May 9-10 at Winona Community Track & Recreation Complex in Winona, Minn.Â
Going into the final weekend of competition, the Huskies have four athletes that have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. Cassie Cardinal is one of the athletes that have provisionally qualified but she has done it in two events which are the shot put and discus. St. Cloud is looking to make some big marks this weekend to get more athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Last time out the Huskies competed in two meets on May 3rd as they were at the Meet of the UnSaintly and the Howard Wood Relays. SCSU tallied two individual titles and one relay title as well as many other top finishes.
The Huskies 4x100m relay team consisting of Patience Yalartai, Jasmine Grant, Jenny Gilbreath and Alicia Evans earned a first place finish off a time of 48.03 to put them third in the NSIC rankings. Their time is a new school record as they beat it by three hundredths of a second that was previously set back in 1999. Earning a title in the discus was Rafael Saez off a throw of 160-05.00 and then finished third in the shot put with a mark of 47-09.00. Taking the title in the long jump competition was Keyshawn Davis as he hit a mark of 23-00.50.
Yalartai also took second place in the long jump competition on a distance of 18-05.25. Cassie Cardinal posted a second place finish in the shot put on a mark of 44-11.75 and a fourth place finish in discus with a distance of 147-03.00. Cardinal's discus mark is a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and ranks her sixth in the conference. In the high jump it was Kellan Flynn tying for third place as she hit a height of 5-01.25.Â
Two, second place finish went to Ryan Johnson in the hammer throw and in the shot put as he threw for a distance of 169-08.00 and 48-04.00 respectively. In the 100m dash, Richard Carr placed third running to a time of 10.86 and placed second in the 200m dash on a time of 21.85. Myle Witcher (15.65) and Matt Mooney (15.71) placed third and fourth respectively in the 110m hurdles. At the Howard Wood Relays, the men's 4x400m relay team came away with a fourth place finish on a time of 3:20.21.Â
