ST CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State senior thrower Ryan Johnson was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Indoor Field Male Athlete of the Week by the league office on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Johnson, a senior from Amery, Wis., placed fifth in the weight throw at Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Johnson's throw of 19.41m/63'8.25" was the top Division II throw of the Open and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. His throw also ranks him first in the NSIC and ninth in the NCAA Division II among all throwers in 2016. The fifth-place finish was the seventh time that Johnson has finished in the top-five in an indoor weight throw event this season.
This is the second time this season that Johnson has been named the NSIC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week as he also took home the honors on Feb. 9. It also marks the third time the last two seasons that he has earned a weekly award from the conference as he was named the NSIC's Outdoor Field Male Athlete of the Week last April.
Johnson and the rest of both the SCSU men's and women's indoor track & field programs are at the 2016 NSIC Indoor Championships in Mankato, Minn. on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato from Friday-Saturday, Feb. 26-27, at Myers Field House. Field events begin on Friday at noon followed by track events at 3 p.m. Saturday will have field events beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals of the track events at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for approximately 4:30 p.m. The All-Conference performers will consist of the top-three place winners in each event and the members of the top-two relay teams from the conference meet.
