Indoor Track & Field Programs Wins Five Events at Ted Nelson Classic

MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Cloud State indoor track and field programs had several standout individual performances at the 2016 Ted Nelson Classic, hosted by Minnesota State, on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Myers Fieldhouse.
The two teams ended up winning a total of five events on the afternoon and had nine top-three finishes. The men's team also had two NCAA indoor provisional qualifying performances.
Among the highlights and top finishers were senior thrower Ryan Johnson winning the weight throw with his toss of 19.27m. The throw was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and improved on his previous qualifying NCAA throw.
Junior thrower Quinn Anderson won the shot put with his toss of 15.59m.
Junior Keyshawn Davis won the long jump and improved on his previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark with his leap of 7.22m. Davis also placed fourth in the triple jump (13.83).
Freshman Elijah Pitchford picked up third place in the long jump (6.74m).
Sophomore Zia Matti won the 5,000m with her time of 20:11.85.
Junior Sam Sunstrom earned the event victory in the 3000m with her run of 10:15.37.
The men's 4x400 relay team of sophomore Marcus Welk, junior JoVonte Suber, freshman Wezley Turner and Isaiah Pitchford placed third in their event with a season-best time of 3:21.20.
Sophomore J.T. Butler placed fifth in 60m with a season-best time of 6.933.
Wezley Turner finished as the runner-up in the 600m (1:21.63).
The women's 4x400 relay team of junior Jasmine Grant, sophomore Emily Yeager, sophomore Natalie Gottschalk and junior Kristen Wendt finished in fourth (4:04.10).
Both indoor track & field programs resume competition next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at the Jackrabbit Invite/D2 Challenge on the campus of South Dakota State.
