Falls 2-0 in First Game and Win 5-3 in Nine Innings In Second
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (17-14, 3-3 NSIC) got a thrilling 5-3 extra inning win in the second game of its doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul (7-17, 1-3 NSIC) to salvage a split with the Golden Bears on Saturday, March 26, at the Husky Dome. The Huskies fell in the first game by a 2-0 score.
Senior Senna Francesconi (7-5) was the story in the circle for the Huskies in game two in going all nine innings with three runs allowed and three strikeouts. Linzy Heim (5-8) was tagged with the loss in game two after being the victor in the opening game for the Golden Bears.
In the second game, the Huskies trailed 3-0 heading into the fifth inning but were able to scrap together a run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth on a junior Jessica Goerger home run with junior Rebecca Harps aboard to tie the game at three all.
In the ninth inning, with the game still knotted at three, junior Abby Bunnell began the rally with a walk. She moved to second on a ground out and scored the eventual game-winning run on a Harps' double to left field. Goerger followed with a base hit to drive in Harps with a key insurance run.
The Golden Bears threatened in their half of the ninth inning on a two-out walk and double to bring the potential winning run to the plate, but Francesconi induced a ground out to the preserve the victory for SCSU.
Goerger had three hits and three RBIs in the second game. Senior Tricia DeBoer also recorded three hits in the victory. Harps picked up two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Junior Megan Hedstrom (5-8) took the loss in the first game for SCSU in allowing two runs and three walks in 2.1 innings. Freshman Kate Kopeck had a steady relief performance for the Huskies in allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings. Heim threw a three-hit shutout for the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears scored early with a run in the first on Kelly MacKenzie's RBI ground out with the bases loaded.
CSP added a run to the advantage in the third inning as Justine Schattner drove in Jamie Fleischhacker with a single.
The three hits for SCSU in the first game came from Bunnell, junior Alyssa Coletto and freshman Morgan Emmans.
