Softball Hosts Three NSIC Opponents This Week

SCSU welcomes in Northern State on Tuesday and takes on No. 15 Winona State and Upper Iowa Over the Weekend
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (17-14, 3-3 NSIC) continues play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) this week by hosting three league opponents at Selke Field. The Huskies are slated to take on Northern State (12-16, 2-2 NSIC) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. SCSU then welcomes in No. 15 nationally ranked Winona State (21-7, 3-2 NSIC) on Saturday, April 2, for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m. St. Cloud State completes the busy home week of action by taking on Upper Iowa (19-9, 5-1 NSIC) on Sunday, April 3, for two games beginning at 1 p.m.

Senior Day – Taige Puetz
SCSU softball is on the road all of next week for six games. The team begins the trip and travels to play two games against Minnesota Crookston on April 6 starting at 1 p.m. The program then goes to Southwest Minnesota State for a doubleheader on April 9 beginning at 1 p.m. The Huskies wrap up the trip and head over to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the USF for two games beginning at noon on April 10.

Senior Day – Taige Puetz
- This year each of St. Cloud State's four senior softball players has chosen a day to have their Senior Day on.
- On April 2, senior Taige Puetz will be honored and recognized.
- Puetz is from St. Charles, Minn. and began her athletic career at St. Cloud State as member of the soccer program for two years after transferring from Rochester Community and Technical College where she also played soccer.
- In 2013, she played in 18 games for the SCSU soccer team and posted five goals including two game-winner plus has two assists.
- She was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week for Nov. 4, 2013 and a member of the 2013 NSIC Fall Academic Team
- In 2014 on the pitch, she led the soccer team with 10 points and four goals while also adding two assists and 49 shots.
- While serving as the team captain in 2014, Puetz (formerly Thoreson) was named to the 2014 All-NSIC Honorable Mention team and the All-NSIC Academic team.
- In 2015, in her first year as a member of the softball team, she played in 29 games with 16 starts while totaling 12 runs, 14 hits, a double, a triple and two RBIs plus 17 total bases and three stolen bases
- She also earned selection to the 2015 NSIC Spring All-Academic Team.
- She is enjoying a career season in 2016 as she has appeared in all 31 games with 30 starts at third base.
- Puetz has totaled 18 runs, 20 hits, three doubles, a triple, 11 RBIs, 25 total bases, five walks, four stolen bases, five sacrifice bunts.
- She has four multi-hit games, two multiple RBI performances and had a five-game hitting streak earlier this season.
- Puetz set a new career high with three hits against Notre Dame College (3/5/16)
- The daughter of Joel and Tori Thoreson and a physical education/health major at SCSU.
- St. Cloud State is running live stats for all six of the home games this week
- The Huskies are 25-6 against Northern State in a series that began in 1980.
- SCSU has a 43-45 record against Winona State since the teams started playing each other in 1969.
- The Huskies hold a slight 10-9 lead in the series against Upper Iowa since the school began matching up in 2005.
- The Northern State Wolves have won two in a row, but only three of their last 10 games overall.
- The Wolves played and defeated Southwest Minnesota State by scores of 6-5 and 8-4 on Friday in Aberdeen, S.D.
- Kelsey Gale has been the club's top hitter with her .391 batting average, 16 runs, 34 hits, eight doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs, 51 bases and 13 stolen bases.
- Kalie Maiden is hitting .329 with 10 runs, 26 hits, eight walks and 11 stolen bases
- The pitching has been strong for the Wolves with a team ERA of 2.92
- Missy Elkins has led the staff with her 2.24 ERA, six wins, 15 appearances, 12 complete games, two shutouts and 84.1 innings pitched
- Jamie Fisher has three wins, three complete games plus two shutouts in 65.2 innings pitched with a team-leading 42 strikeouts.
- Winona State swept a series from Minnesota Crookston on Saturday in games that were played in Fayette, Iowa because of weather in Winona, Minn.
- The Warriors played a total of five games on the Upper Iowa campus this last week and went 3-2 in those games to open league play.
- Winona State is slated to take on Wayne State at home for two games on Tuesday, March 29, before coming to St. Cloud.
- Reed Karsten has been the top hitter on the squad with her .404 batting average, 20 runs, 41 hits, eight doubles, two triples, three home runs, 20 RBIs and 55 total bases.
- Natalie Kalmes is hitting .382 with 18 runs, 26 hits, seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 19 RBIs and 41 total bases
- Paige Keegan sports a .358 batting average, four doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs
- McKenna Larsen leads the team with her 21 RBIs to go along with 22 hits and 17 runs
- Hannah Lythberg is 11-3 on the campaign with 1.36 ERA, 12 complete games, four shutouts, 87.1 innings pitched and 45 strikeouts
- Alex Walker has been steady with her 2.10 ERA, 5-2 record, six complete games in 56.2 innings thrown
- Upper Iowa have won five games in a row and opened league play with five wins in the program's first six games.
- The Peacocks will host Augustana for two games on Tuesday, March 29, before traveling to take on Minnesota Duluth on Friday, April 1, and then SCSU on Saturday, April 2.
- Lauren Marlinghaus has been the program's top hitter with her .350 batting average along with four home runs and 14 RBIs.
- Jacqueline Flood is hitting .333 with a team leading 17 runs and 30 hits along with three home runs and 15 RBIs
- Tara Walls leads the club with her 17 RBIs.
- UIU has already hit 42 doubles, nine triples and 18 home runs this season.
- The Huskies went 3-3 last week with all the games being played in St. Cloud because of the weather.
- The team started the week and played a pair of scheduled home outdoor games at Selke Field before getting back in the Husky Dome and taking on Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul for a total of four games that were originally scheduled to be on the road.
- Junior Abby Bunnell led the team with her .389 batting average and three walks in those games.
- She takes a 13-game hitting streak into the action this week.
- Junior Jessica Goerger led the team with her four runs scored, eight hits, two home runs, six RBIs and 16 total bases in the six games last week.
- Freshman Kate Kopeck allowed one hit and no runs in her 6.1 innings in relief while picking up her first career save.
- Senior Senna Francesconi picked up a pair of wins, had three complete games and recorded 22.1 innings pitched.
- Francesconi threw a career-high nine innings in earning the complete game extra inning victory against Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday (3/26/16).
- Francesconi leads the team on the season with seven wins, 94.2 innings thrown and 61 strikeouts.
- She is only one inning from tying her career season-high for innings in a single campaign.
- Bunnell leads the team with her .398 batting average, 25 runs scored, 41 hits, 52 total bases, 12 multi-hit games and 20 stolen bases in as many attempts.
- Goerger is the club's leader in home runs (5), RBIs (24), slugging percentage (.680), walks (12), hit by pitches (8) and on-base percentage (.500).
- Junior Alyssa Coletto is hitting .372 with 35 hits, 13 runs, four doubles, two triples, two home runs, 12 RBIs and five stolen bases.
- Junior Rebecca Harps has recorded a .352 batting average, 22 runs scored, 32 hits, six doubles, 17 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
- Sophomore Veronica Wold leads the team with her nine doubles.
- Kopeck has a 5-1 record with a 2.36 ERA and only six walks allowed in 50.1 innings thrown.
