Softball Downed Twice By Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The St. Cloud State softball team (22-21, 8-10 NSIC) gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall in its second game of the day to Sioux Falls (28-13, 12-6 NSIC) on Sunday, April 10, at Sherman Park. The Huskies lost in the first game by an 8-0 score in five innings to the Cougars.
In the second game, Sioux Falls took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch.
The Huskies rallied and took the lead with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Rebecca Harps roped a single through the right side. She moved to second as a fielder's choice in which no out could be recorded that also allowed junior Megan Hedstrom to reach base. Junior Jessica Goerger then pushed a double to the gap to score both Harps and Hedstrom.
Sioux Falls would rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Kerrigan Hoshaw rapped a single to right field. Brooke Stetzler followed with a base hit. Danielle Walker ended the game with her three-run home run to give the Cougars a 4-2 victory.
Hedstrom (7-11) took the loss in the second game in allowing all four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. Sioux Falls' Breanna Black (14-6) threw a complete game with seven hits and two runs allowed.
The first game of the day was all Cougars in an 8-0 SCSU loss. Senior Senna Francesconi (10-8) surrendered six runs on seven hits in getting the start and only going two innings. Freshman Kate Kopeck allowed two runs on three hits in her two innings of relief. Hoshaw (13-7) earned the victory with four scoreless innings.
Stetzler had a three-hit performance in the first game. Walker had a pair of hits plus three RBIs. Haley Covais also had a pair of hits and three RBIs for USF.
Hedstrom led the charge for the Huskies with a pair of hits in the day's opening game.
St. Cloud State now returns home to host Bemidji State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12, beginning at 2 p.m. at Selke Field.
