Softball Falls Twice To Southwest Minnesota State

MARSHALL, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (22-19, 8-8 NSIC) lost both of its road games to Southwest Minnesota State (13-20, 9-7 NSIC) on Saturday, April 9, at Mustang Field by scores of 6-1 and 8-0.
Junior Megan Hedstrom (7-10) was tagged with the loss for SCSU in the day's opening game as she allowed four runs on six hits and five in walks in her three innings. Freshman Kate Kopeck threw the final three innings in the game for the Huskies and surrendered two runs on three hits. Alex O'Connor (5-7) limited to SCSU to four hits and one run while recording nine strikeouts.
The Mustangs jumped on the board first with two runs in the opening inning with Sam Flack and Taylor Chavez registering RBIs.
The Huskies answered with their lone run of the day in the second inning with senior Taige Puetz's ground out scoring junior Alyssa Coletto. Coletto recorded a pair of hits for SCSU in the game to lead the offense.
SMSU scored two more in the third inning and single tallies in the fourth and fifth inning to take the 6-1 victory. SCSU was outhit 9-4 in the game and committed a pair of errors.
The game was a similar story with Southwest Minnesota State again taking an early lead with a single tally in the first. The team then exploded for a six-spot in the fourth and finished off the scoring with one run in the sixth inning to make the final score 8-0.
Chavez was the hitting hero in the second game for the Mustangs with three RBIs on her two hits. Puetz was the only player in the SCSU lineup to record a hit and ended the game with pair of knocks.
Senior Senna Francesconi (10-7) allowed seven runs (four earned) in her four innings. She also allowed six hits and walked four batters. Athena Golling (5-4) limited the Huskies to just two hits in throwing the shutout.
St. Cloud State returns to action with a pair of games against Sioux Falls on the road on Sunday, April 10, beginning at noon.
