Men Track & Field Ranks Seventh and Women In 10th After Day One of NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The St. Cloud State track and field programs were led by event victories and school record performances by senior Ryan Johnson in the hammer throw and junior Keyshawn Davis in the long jump on the first day of the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Howard Wood Field. The men's team is seventh overall with 72 points. Sioux Falls leads with 47 points. The SCSU women's team is ranked 10th with 11 points. Augustana leads the women with 59.5 points.
The two teams ended up winning a total of two events and setting two school records on the first day.
Davis set both the new school and meet record with his jump of 7.56m/24'09.75". It was his second event victory of the season. He broke the previous meet record of Derek Bredy of MSU Moorhead from the 2013 season. The school record that Davis broke was Flurohn Crutch's 7.46m/24'6.00" set during the 1996 season. Davis' jump of 7.56m also achieved NCAA outdoor qualifying standards.
Senior Ryan Johnson set the new school record with his toss of 60.86m/199'08. He broke his own school record that he set earlier this season. He has now won the hammer seven times this season. The throw also bettered his previous NCAA Outdoor qualifying mark in the event.
Junior Myles Witcher finished seventh in the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles (15.14) and qualified for the finals.
Junior Isaiah Pitchford won the preliminaries in the 400m (49.27) and finished eighth in the 200m (22.02) and will compete in the finals of both event on Saturday.
The women were led by junior Sam Sunstrom, who placed fourth overall in the 10,000m with a time of 36:10.57".
Fellow junior Patience Yalartai placed seventh in the long jump with her 5.51m/18'01.00".
Freshman Nicole Morpurgo finished seventh (12.24) in the preliminaries of the 100m dash and qualified for the finals on Saturday. She also placed eighth in the preliminaries of the 200m (25.23).
Junior Rachel Sakry placed seventh in the preliminaries 800m (2:18.83) and is running in the finals of the event.
Next both teams continue with the second day of the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 14. Among the events that will be run are the discus, shot put, triple jump, discus, 4x100m relay, 3,000m steeple, 1,500m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 200m, 5,000m and the 4x400m relay.
