SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The St. Cloud State track and field programs were led by the team's throwers on the second and final day of the NSIC Track & Field Championship on Saturday, May 14, at Robert Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The men's team placed third overall with 91 points. The winner from the men's side was Minnesota State with 166.50 points. The SCSU women finished eighth overall with 41 points. The MSU women won with 146.33 points.
The two SCSU teams ended up with 12 all-conference performers including a school and conference record throw in the men's discus. The squads also achieved four NCAA Outdoor qualifying marks.
Junior Quinn Anderson set the school and the meet record with his toss of 56.02m/183'09 in the discus. The throw won the event and also achieved an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. He broke the school and meet record set by SCSU's Adam Kershaw in 2011. It was the eighth time this season that Anderson has finished among the top-three in the event. He was closely in the discus rankings by seniors teammates Ryan Johnson and Rafael Saez. Johnson had a throw of 53.60m/175'10 to place second. The mark also achieved NCAA Outdoor provisional qualifying standards. The second-place finish was the fifth time he has finished in the top-three in the discus this season. Senior Rafael Saez placed third in the event with his toss of 53.07m/174'01". It was the sixth time he has finished in the top-three in the discus this season.
Johnson also placed second in the shot put with his throw of 15.89m, while Saez placed third in the shot put (15.85). It was the fourth time that Saez has finished in the top-three of the shot put.
Johnson was named the 2016 NSIC High Point Performer for lading all the men that competed with his 26 points. He won the hammer throw on Friday and then placing second in both the discus and the shot put on Saturday.
Junior Patience Yalartai was the runner-up in the triple jump with her leap of 11.72m/38'05.50". It was her third time in the top-three in the triple jump this season.
Freshman Elijah Pitchford ranked third in the triple jump with his leap of 14.49m/47'06.50". It was the third time he has finished in the top-three in the triple on the campaign.
Junior Isaiah Pitchford placed second in the 400m dash (49.77). It was the fifth time he has placed in the top-three in the event during the outdoor season.
Junior Sam Sunstrom finished fifth in the 5000m (17:17.87). The time was a season-best and reached NCAA Outdoor provisional qualify standards.
Junior Myles Witcher finished just of all-conference status in finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.82).
The 4x400 relay team of freshman Marcus Welk, freshman Wezley Turner, sophomore Wyatt Vernon and junior Isaiah Pitchford placed third in their event (3:20.78) to all achieve NSIC All-Conference status.
Next both teams will send qualified members to the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 26-28 in Bradenton, Fla.
