SCSU tennis to compete at 2017 NSIC Championships on April 22-23

The St. Cloud State University women's tennis team has gained a bid to the upcoming 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship tournament on April 22-23. Â The two-day tourney will feature eight teams and it will be played at the Lifetime Fitness tennis complex in Minnetonka, Minn.
The Huskies are the number seven seed in the tournament and they will square off against number two seed Upper Iowa in first round play at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22.
SCSU finished the regular season with an 11-7 overall record and it tied for sixth place in the always rugged NSIC with a 6-5 league record (along with Bemidji State). Â In the other first round match-ups, #1 seed Augustana will play #8 Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m., #3 Winona State will play #6 Bemidji State at 11:30 a.m. and #5 Minnesota State Mankato will play #4 Minnesota State Moorhead at 4:30 p.m.
The winning teams will then advance to second round play at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 23. Â The winner of SCSU/UIU will play the winner of WSU/BSU, while the winner of AU/UMD will play the winner of MSUM/MSU. Â The two winners of the 8 a.m. matches on April 23 will then advance to the NSIC championship match at Noon on April 23.
The winner of the NSIC Women's Tennis Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The NCAA DII Central Region Tournament will take place on campuses on April 29 through May 2. The NCAA DII Championships (Final 16) will take place on May 10-13 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Spring, Florida.

- The Huskies have won NSIC championships in 2010, 2009, 1983, 1982, 1981 and 1980.  Of note, Augustana has won the last six NSIC championships from 2011 to 2016.
- At last year's NSIC tournament, SCSU lost a 5-2 decision in first round play against Sioux Falls.
- The Huskies are led this year by Jill Kedrowski in singles play, who owns a 14-4 record and Fernanda Quintino dos Santos, who is 11-6 in singles play this spring.
- In doubles play, Kedrowski and partner Alexie Portz own a 14-4 record this spring.  Marilia Roque Diversi and Abigail Kantor are 8-6 in doubles play this season.
- On Feb. 26, SCSU lost a close 5-4 match in Sartell against NSIC tournament first round opponent Upper Iowa.
- SCSU's 11-7 record this year marked the second consecutive season that the Huskies have gained a winning record in regular season play. Â SCSU has only posted two losing records in regular season play since 1976.
- SCSU is led by head coach Jerry Anderson, who has led the Huskies for 12 seasons.  His career record with the women's team is now 194-119.  Earlier this season, Anderson won his 500th career match as a college tennis coach.  He served as the head coach for the SCSU men's tennis team from 1998 to 2016.  His combined record for the men's and women's tennis teams at SCSU is 502-269. Â
