CLERMONT, FLA. – The St. Cloud State University softball team is back on the winning track. Thanks to another outstanding day at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, St. Cloud State has started another win streak, courtesy of a 7-3 win over the University of Indianapolis and a 3-0 victory over Nyack College Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies opened the day with another dominant 7-3 win, this time over the UIndy Greyhounds. St. Cloud State went to work in the top of the first inning thanks to clutch hitting. Morgan Emmans (Blaine, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) got things started by hitting a two-out single before Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) gave the Huskies an early 2-0 lead by hitting a monster home run to dead center.
Kate Kopeck (Lumseden, Sask. / Lumsden) made quick work of the Greyhound hitters in the bottom of the second, giving St. Cloud State the opportunity to score even more runs in the second. The Huskies did just that, as newly engaged Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary School) scored on a two-out single from Raven Vanden Langenberg to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Greyhounds cut the lead to 3-1 when their six and seven batters recorded back-to-back hits to cut the Huskies lead in half. St. Cloud State, though, would again strike in the third, as Emmans opened the inning with a solo home run the bump the lead to 4-1. UIndy did manage to cut the lead in half again before St. Cloud State scored two runs in the fourth to make it 6-2. Never satisfied, the Huskies scored another run in the fifth, as Francasconi's solo homer gave the team a 7-3 cushion.
UIndy would score one more run in the top of the sixth, but the damage was already done, as St. Cloud State went to win by a final score of 7-3.
After the 7-3 win over the Greyhounds, the Huskies hitting carried over to game two against Nyack as they battled to a 3-0 victory over the Warriors. The first inning against Nyack looked eerily similar to the first inning against UIndy, as Estrada jacked another two-run blast, this time to left field, to give her team an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The two-run home run from Estrada turned out to be all St. Cloud State would need in the end, but the team still added of insurance run in the bottom of the second. After sophomore outfielder Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) reached first on a leadoff single and took second thanks to a heads up base running play just seconds later. The sophomore was then bunted to third by newly engaged Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary School) and scored on a beautiful sacrifice squeeze from Alexis Jacobs (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury), giving the Huskies a 3-0 cushion with five innings left to play.
St. Cloud State wouldn't score another run in the game, but neither would Nyack, as Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) and Bradi Yost (Parkersburg, Iowa / Aplington-Parkersburg) held the Warriors batters at bay for seven full innings. Thomsen earned her second win of the season while Yost earned the save.
With the wins, the Huskies improved to 15-3 on the season and continue their win streak to three games. St. Cloud State will conclude its spring break trip on Monday, March 11 when the team takes on Ferris State and Rockhurst.
