Huskies honor seniors with sweep of Crookston

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University softball team figured out the perfect way to honor its three seniors on Senior Day: by completely dominating in yet another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader. Yes, the Huskies were certainly still hot in their doubleheader against the University of Minnesota-Crookston, as they defeated the visiting Golden Eagles 9-1 in game one and 14-0 in game two to improve to 33-11 overall and 15-5 in NSIC play.
Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) wasted no time getting her team on the board in the first inning. The sophomore first baseman blasted her sixth home run of the year to give St. Cloud State an early 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
The Huskies looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the second, as Morgan Emmans (Blaine, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) reached after being hit by a pitch to open the inning. However, the senior catcher was stranded at third after being bunted over by Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour).
It was Minnesota-Crookston that would strike next, as the Golden Eagles evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Designated player Mikayla Jones hit a leadoff double off senior ace Kate Kopeck (Lumsden, Sask. / Lumsden) and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1.
Again, the Huskies threatened in the bottom of the third, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Again, Minnesota-Crookston managed to hold St. Cloud State's bats at bay and preserve the 1-1 tie for at least one more inning. That tie was short lived. The Huskies tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to heads up base running from Vanden Langenberg and Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary) to take a 3-1 lead over the Golden Eagles.
Two innings later, St. Cloud State decided to end things early, as the team scored six runs on six hits to take the opener by a final score of 9-1. Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) kicked things off with a leadoff double to deep left center and both advanced to third and scored on a passed ball to give the Huskies a 4-1 advantage. Emmans, then, walked, stole second, stole third and scored on an RBI grounder from Vanden Langenberg to make it 5-1 St. Cloud State advantage.
The highlight of the inning, though, belong to Francesconi, as she hit the team's fourth inside-the-park home run of the season to make it 6-1 before Alexis Jacobs (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury), Alexandra Pinkowski (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake), Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) and Conrads tallied hits for the Huskies to secure the 9-1 victory.
Kopeck was once again impressive on the mound as she earned win No. 13 on the year in dominating fashion. The senior allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of work while tallying three strikeouts in the victory.
Conrads and Francesconi were the top hitters in the first game, as they both went 2-3 at the plate for St. Cloud State. Conrads was 2-3 with a run and team-leading three RBI while Francesconi was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Like in game one, the Huskies wasted no time getting on the board in the second game, as they scored four runs on four hits off Golden Eagles ace Paige Pitlick to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville), Conrads, Vanden Langenberg and Francesconi continued to stay hot, as they all tallied hits in the first inning, while Conrads, Vadnen Langenberg and Francesconi tallied the team's RBI's in innings numero uno.
Despite tallying another hit, St. Cloud State was kept quiet in the second inning, but the team unleashed for eight runs on seven hits in the third to take an 12-0 lead over Minnesota-Crookston. The Huskies then added one in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 14-0 victory over Minnesota-Crookston.
Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport) was impeccable on the mound for St. Cloud State, as she threw a one-hit complete game shutout against the Golden Eagles. In fact, the first-year pitcher was an out away from recording a perfect game, but LaPoint had to settle for a one-hitter to highlight her eighth win of the season.
With the wins, the Huskies extend their win streak to an impressive 11 games as they are now 33-11 overall and 15-5 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will hit the road for the first time in nearly a month this weekend, as the team takes on red-hot Upper Iowa and No. 17 Winona State University this upcoming Friday and Saturday.
