Porter Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Game Two, St. Cloud State Softball Splits First NSIC Series

Huskies go 1-1 against Winona State to open 2024 Northern Sun schedule
ROCHESTER, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (18-10, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its inaugural conference doubleheader of the 2024 season against Winona State (17-11, 1-1 NSIC) on Friday in Rochester. The Warriors took game one, 10-2 in five innings and the Huskies responded, taking game two, 1-0.
GAME ONE (5 INN.): ST. CLOUD STATE 2, WINONA STATE 10
Winona State scored six runs in the first two innings to take a decisive, early lead. WSU poured in four runs in the first and two more in the second after a pair of RBI-singles. WSU added another RBI-single in the fourth inning before the Huskies scored.
In the top of the fifth inning, freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a bases loaded two-RBI double to get the Huskies on the board, cutting their deficit to five.
After an RBI-single and a two-RBI double, in the bottom of the fifth, the game ended as the Warriors took an eight run advantage.
Top Huskies
Porter got the ball in the second game and made the most of her third start of the year. She blanked Winona State, throwing her first career complete game shutout. She scattered six hits and worked around two walks over 7.0 innings to earn her eighth win of the season. She struck out five batters and finished the game with under 100 pitches (98).
The Huskies scored the lone run of the game on an RBI-double off the bat of Weinberger in the top of the third inning.
Winona State's Abby Brown also had an extremely strong, pitching a one-run complete game. She only allowed one run on two hits while recording three strikeouts over 7.0 innings. She walked three batters and also finished the game under 100 pitches (94).
Top Huskies
The Huskies continue Northern Sun play next weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders. SCSU welcomes Wayne State (4-20, 0-0 NSIC) to St. Cloud on Friday and Augustana (15-12, 0-0 NSIC) on Saturday. Friday's games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. while Saturday's pair are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Both doubleheaders will take place in the Husky Dome on the campus of St. Cloud State. - Porter posted her eighth win – extending her career-best for wins in a season. She tallied her second career complete game and first career shutout in her first career game pitching 7.0 innings. She is the first Husky to throw a complete game-shutout since Trinity Junker did last season, on May 3 in a 4-0 win over Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament in Rochester. She surpassed 35 strikeouts on the season and 85 for her career. She has now pitched more than 60.0 innings this season and over 135.0 for her career.
- Weinberger tallied her 205th career hit.
- Quesnell posted her 15th hit of the season and has recorded a hit in three consecutive games. She scored her 40th career run.
- Fitzgerald recorded her second two-walk game of the season.
