St. Cloud State Softball Uses Strong Pitching Performances to Sweep Wildcats

Huskies outscore Wayne State 10-1 in first homes games since February 4
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (20-10, 3-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) swept its first conference doubleheader of the season against Wayne State (4-24, 0-4 NSIC) on Friday in St. Cloud. The Huskies claimed game one, 4-1 and game two, 6-0.
The duo of junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) and sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) combined to allow one run over 14.0 innings, each picking up a win. Eickhoff struck out 10 batters in her 9.2 innings and Porter allowed just one baserunner in her 4.1 innings.
Junior catcher/left fielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.), junior first baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) each tallied 3+ hits on the day. Holzhueter led the way, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple. She scored three runs and drove in two more. Fitzgerald went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. She recorded three RBI. Weiss went 4-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 4, WAYNE STATE 1
St. Cloud State got on the board first, in the bottom of the third inning after Weiss hit an RBI double to score Holzhueter. WSC responded in the next half inning with an RBI-single to tie the game at one.
Porter came in to relieve Eickhoff in the fifth inning who scattered seven hits and one walk in her 4.2 innings, only allowing one run. She also struck out seven batters. Porter inherited two baserunners but recorded the third out of the inning against her first batter.
In the bottom of the sixth, SCSU hit back-to-back home runs, reclaiming the lead. Fitzgerald hit a two-run shot before redshirt freshman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a solo shot in the next at bat, to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.
Porter earned the win after closing out the final 2.1 innings only allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third behind back-to-back RBI-doubles from Weiss and Fitzgerald. Two innings later, SCSU tacked on two more runs on RBIs from Weiss and freshman outfielder Kori Needham (Milan, Ill.). In the sixth, the Huskies took a 6-0 lead after Holzhueter hit a two-RBI triple.
Eickhoff struck out three and only allowed three hits in 5.0 innings, earning the win. Porter recorded back-to-back three up, three down innings to close the game out for SCSU.

- Frechette's home run was her seventh of the season. She recorded her fourth multi-hit game of the season and stole her fifth base of the season.
- Fitzgerald tallied her 20th hit of the season and surpassed 25 RBI to set a new single-season career high. Her home run was the seventh of the season and first since March 4 against Trevecca Nazarene at THE Spring Games in Florida.
- Weiss picked up her second double in three games. She tallied multiple hits for the ninth time this season.
- Eickhoff's seven strikeouts are a new season-high and the most she has posted since April 2, 2023, against Minot State when she fanned seven.

- Eickhoff has now pitched 75.0 innings this season and 235.0 in her career. She surpassed 45 strikeouts on the season.
- Fitzgerald tallied her fourth multi-hit game of the season. She hit her fifth double of the season.
- Weiss recorded her third double in the last four games and fifth of the season. She surpassed 25 hits on the season. She also posted her 10th multi-hit game and 15th RBI of the season.
