St. Cloud State Softball Readies for First Home Northern Sun Games

Huskies welcome Wayne State Friday, Augustana Saturday in first home games since Feb. 4
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (18-10, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will play its first home games since the season-opening Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament (Feb. 3-4) on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies will play Wayne State (4-22, 0-2 NSIC) on Friday at 10 a.m. and noon and Augustana (18-13, 3-1 NSIC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. All the games will take place in the Husky Dome on the campus of SCSU.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State opened its conference season last Friday, splitting its doubleheader with Winona State in Rochester. WSU took game one, 10-2 in five innings before the Huskies won the second game, 1-0.
Notes & Top Huskies from Game One – 10-2 loss (5 inn.) to Winona State
Friday's doubleheader will mark the 41st and 42nd times SCSU will face off against the Wildcats. The Huskies hold a 23-17 advantage in the all-time series. The teams split the two-game series a season ago in SCSU's final two games prior to the NSIC Tournament. The Huskies dropped the first game 5-4 in eight innings and picked up a 7-1 win in the second. St. Cloud State is 8-2 in its last 10 matchups with WSC.
Saturday's two-game set with Augustana will be the 114th and 115th matchups between the programs. Augie holds a decisive 77-36 record in the all-time series. The teams saw each other four times in a span of eight days last season. Those matchups included a regular season doubleheader in St. Cloud in late April and two games in the NSIC Tournament in early May. SCSU split the regular season games, taking the first 4-1, before falling 9-2 in the second. In postseason play, the Vikings took the first matchup 5-4 and the second one 4-3 in eight innings, ending SCSU's season in agonizing fashion. The Huskies are 3-7 in the teams' last 10 tilts.
SCOUTING WAYNE STATE
Wayne State comes to town with a 4-22 (0-2 NSIC) record opening Northern Sun play with a pair of loses to Minot State. Prior to that set, the Wildcats had won two of its last three dating back to early March at THE Spring Games in Florida. In between those two stretches, WSC had its final two games in Florida canceled and its first two scheduled NSIC games with UMary canceled as well.
WSC is led on offense by freshman catcher Haylee Weber, freshman outfielder Jordyn Klein and freshman catcher/infielder Jordyn Rochholz. Weber is slashing .296/.322/.352 with 16 hits (three doubles). She has scored three runs and has 10 RBI. Klein is slashing .282/.349/.359 with 22 hits (team-high six doubles). She has scored seven runs, has four RBI and is 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts. Rochholz is slashing .258/.290/.315 with a team-leading 23 hits (five doubles). She has scored 10 runs, has 10 RBI and is 4-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
Junior pitcher Grace Lucka has made 17 appearances with four starts and owns a 3-4 record. She has pitched 45.0 innings, including one complete game. She has a 5.13 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP while opponents are batting .278 against her.
Christy Warnock is in her second year at the helm of Wayne State softball. She owns a record of 13-29 (8-21 NSIC). Last year, the Wildcats were led by fifth-year senior Kim Vidlak who earned All-NSIC Second Team honors for a third straight season. Warnock came to Wayne State after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota. She helped the Coyotes to a 28-25 record and a fourth-place finish in the Summit League with an 11-10 mark in her final season at USD in 2022. Her first season as an assistant coach at USD (2019) saw the Coyotes post a 33-28 record and 12-6 mark in the Summit League, the most wins for the South Dakota program in the Division I era.
SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
Augustana enters the matchup with a 18-13 (3-1 NSIC) record after sweeping Northern State and splitting with MSU Moorhead to open conference play. The Vikings also played Northwest Missouri State last week, winning 4-0 and 19-2. Augie is 5-5 in its last 10 games.
The Vikings boast a lot of offensive firepower and are led by sophomore catcher/infielder Ashton Dorman who is slashing .398/.423/.570 with 37 hits (10 doubles and two home runs). She has 16 RBI, has scored 13 runs and is 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts. Freshman outfielder Desi Cuevas is slashing .390/.446/.600 with a team-high 39 hits (six doubles, three triples, three home runs). She has scored 19 runs, has 15 RBI and is 7-for-8 on stolen base attempts. Senior catcher/infielder Torri Chute is slashing .306/.367/.582 with 30 hits (nine doubles and six home runs). She has a team-high 27 RBI and has scored 17 runs. Chute was named NSIC Player of the Week on March 26 for her performances in the previous week which included a three-home run game versus NWMSU. Of those three home runs, two were grand slams and she went on to set a single game school record with 10 RBI.
Senior pitcher Grace Glanzer is having an incredible season. All 13 of her appearances have been starts and she owns an 8-3 record. She has pitched nine complete games, five solo shutouts and two combined shutouts. Glanzer has a 0.64 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP over 84.0 innings and opponents are batting a mere .154 against her. Glanzer has been named NSIC Pitcher of the Week twice (Feb. 5 and March 26). Last week, she complied a 3-0 record and did not allow an earned run over 19.0 innings. She gave up just four hits and one walk total, as opponents hit .065 against her. She struck out 26 batters en route to hurling two complete game shutouts. She was also named the Wilson/NFCA Division II Pitcher of the week for her efforts last week.
One of the most successful and respected coaches in Division II softball, Gretta Melsted is in her 18th season as the head coach at Augustana. Melsted owns a 682-257 (.726) overall record and a 321-64 (.833) record in NSIC play. She has guided Augustana to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including winning the 2019 NCAA DII National Championship. In 2023, the Vikings claimed their third-straight NSIC Championship while racking up a season record of 39-15. Torri Chute was named the NSIC Player of the Year while Andrea Cain garnered the NSIC Freshman of the Year and Lexi Lander the NSIC Newcomer of the Year. As a team, the Vikings ranked second in the nation with a .607 slugging percentage and fifth in the with a .356 batting average. Individually, Chute led the team with a .444 batting average and Kennedy Buckman with 62 runs batted in. In the circle, Lexi Lander recorded 18 wins with Hailey Houston totaling 17. Torri Chute and Delaney Young were both awarded All-America honors from the NFCA and D2CCA.
RECORD BOOK UPDATES
In the Huskies first game of the season, a 19-3 win over Black Hills State a pair of Huskies produced school record performances.
Junior corner infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak, Lawn, Ill.) tied school records for home runs in a game (two) and RBI in a game (seven). She was the first player to have a two-home run game since Raven Vanden Langenberg in 2023 and a seven RBI game since Jasmin Estrada in 2021.
Freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) tied the school record for singles in a game (four) in her first collegiate game. She became the first player to hit four singles in a game since Emily Edgerton in 2010.
NSIC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
St. Cloud State sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Softball Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 20. It was her first NSIC weekly honor this season and of her career. She was the second Husky to earn NSIC weekly award honors after junior outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) was named Player of the Week on Feb. 5.
Porter earned three straight saves to end the Huskies 3-1 stretch in Sioux Center, Iowa. She appeared in all four games and did not allow an earned run over her 9.0 innings. She struck out five batters and only allowed five hits (all singles) – opponents hit just .129 against her.
NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
St. Cloud State junior outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Softball Player of the Week on Feb. 5 for her efforts in the Huskies opening weekend sweep. It was her first NSIC weekly honor this season and of her career.
Holzhueter went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run, scoring three runs and driving in three runs made her in her debut for the Huskies. She hit .600 (6-for-10) in SCSU's 3-0 opening weekend. Five of her six hits were extra base hits – three doubles, one triple and one home run. She drove in four runs, walked once and was successful on her lone stolen base attempt. Holzhueter led the NSIC with a 1.400 slugging percentage and a 2.036 OPS.
PRESEASON POLLING
St. Cloud State was selected to finish fifth in the 2024 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on Jan. 24. Additionally, graduate student outfielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) was named the Player to Watch, and junior right-handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) was named the Pitcher to Watch.
Head Coach Mitch Roberts enters his third season at the helm of the Huskies program. He led last year's team to a 34-20 overall record and 16-8 record in NSIC play, finishing tied for fourth.
Weinberger returns to SCSU for a graduate year after starting every game last season. On defense last season, she tallied 46 putouts with two assists for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. At the plate, Weinberger went 63-for-176 for a season batting average of .358, an on-base percentage of .418 while slugging .460. She tallied 31 RBIs, 13 doubles, one triple, and home run. She earned CSC All-District honors, was named a NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction award winner, and an NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence member last season in addition to earning All-NSIC Second Team honors the past two seasons.
Eickhoff looks to build off her strong sophomore campaign a season ago. In her second season with the Huskies last year, Eickhoff served as the Huskies top secondary pitcher. She appeared in 21 games with 13 starts, compiling a 9-2 record with one shutout. She struck out 62 batters over 72.0 innings while allowing just five sacrifice bunts. She posted a 3.69 season ERA. In conference play, Eickhoff was an even bigger threat, going 8-0 against NSIC opponents. Additionally, she was an NSIC All-Academic team member.

She surpassed 35 strikeouts on the season and 85 for her career. She has now pitched more than 60.0 innings this season and over 135.0 for her career.

SCSU welcomed 14 newcomers over the offseason include six transfers – senior Mckenna Stallings (Milton Freewater, Ore. / Eastern Oregon), juniors Maddie Buchert (West Fargo, N.D. / Saint Benedict), Molly Gross (Columbia Heights, Minn. / Anoka-Ramsey CC), Reese Holzheuter (Shakopee, Minn. / Sioux Falls) and Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn. / St. Cloud Technical & CC) and redshirt freshman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn. / Colorado Christian) – and eight freshmen – Bree Beck (Lakeville, Minn. / South HS), Kaylee Collins (Lakeville, Minn. / North HS), Hannah Harms (Bartlett, Ill. / South Elgin HS), Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn. / Prior Lakes HS), Miranda Johanek (Green Bay, Wis. / Denmark HS), Kori Needham (Milan, Ill. / Rockridge HS), Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Megan Wilcox (Centennial, Colo. / Eaglecrest HS).
THE SENIORS
Six athletes will compete in their senior campaign in 2024 as graduate student Kaitlyn Istanovich (Chisago City, Minn.) is joined by fifth-year Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) along with true seniors Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.), Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.), Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho) and Stallings.
THE JUNIORS
The seven juniors are Buchert, Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.), Holzhueter, Gross, Madison Spah (Ramsey, Minn.) and Stangle.
THE SOPHOMORES
Two athletes make up this year's sophomore class – Kendall Buss (Luverne, Minn.) and Justyce Porter (Kent. Wash.).
