St. Cloud State Softball Splits Final Regular Season Road Doubleheader in Moorhead

Huskies record shutout in game one, drop game two in extra innings
MOORHEAD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (27-23, 10-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its final regular season road series against MSU Moorhead (28-18, 15-9 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon at Nemzek Softball Field in Moorhead. The Huskies took game one, 5-0 and dropped the second, 4-3 in 10 innings.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 5, MSU MOORHEAD 0
St. Cloud State opened the games scoring in the top of the second inning when freshman right fielder Hannah Harms (Bartlett, Ill.) scored freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) with an RBI bunt single. The Huskies added another run in the third inning when freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) laid down an RBI bunt single, scoring junior left fielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.).
SCSU extended its lead to five in the fifth inning when it scored three runs on four hits. Harms hit an RBI-single up the middle, senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) hit an RBI-double to right field and junior pinch hitter Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.) hit an RBI-single to right field.
Junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) and sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) were dominate, pitching a combined shutout. The pair allowed five hits, issued one walk and struck out five.
Top Huskies
Like clockwork, the Huskies scored runs in the first inning of the second game of a doubleheader. SCSU put two runs across when Weiss hit a two-RBI double to left-center, scoring fifth year right fielder/first baseman Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) and junior corner infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.). The Huskies added another run in the top of the second when Holzhueter hit an RBI-double to center field to score redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.).
The Dragons got one run back in the bottom of the second to cut their deficit down to two runs before getting another one back in the third, to bring themselves within one. MSUM scored again to tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team was able to score in the final innings of regulation, sending the game into extra innings.
SCSU tallied one hit in the eighth and two in the ninth but were unable to score. MSU Moorhead finally broke through in the bottom of the tenth, scoring on a fielder's choice to end the game.

The Huskies return home for a pair of doubleheaders against UMary (9-35, 2-20 NSIC) and Minot State (22-15, 17-7 NSIC) to close out their regular season schedule next weekend. SCSU takes on the Mauraders on Saturday and the Beavers on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. at Selke Field in St. Cloud.
