Huskies win 27-run thriller with walk-off in first game
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 14, MINOT STATE 13
In one of the wildest games of the SCSU softball season, the Huskies and Minot State combined for 27 runs on 30 hits in a game that lasted over two hours and forty minutes.
It was all Beavers early as they plated four runs in the first inning and two more in the second, taking a 6-0 lead. SCSU got one run back in the bottom of the second after senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) recorded her first RBI of the season.
Then the bottom of the third inning happened. The Huskies scored nine runs on six hits to take their first lead of the game at 10-6. Fifth year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) got the run party started with an RBI-double, scoring senior center fielder Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho), who reached on an error to open the inning. Junior first baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice and drove in junior catcher/left fielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) who hit a double earlier. Freshman designated player/catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) drove in the Huskies third and fourth runs of the inning with a two-RBI double to left field. Krueger came to the plate with the bases loaded and made the most of the opportunity, hitting her first career grand slam. SCSU loaded the bases again but were only able to get one more run across after Fitzgerald earned a walk to bring home redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.). In the next at-bat, MISU got the force out at home and SCSU fouled out to end the inning.
Minot State did not trail for long, getting back even with the Huskies at 10 runs in the next half inning after an RBI-double and a three-run shot to left field. In the fifth inning, the Beavers regained control of the game, scoring three runs to take a 13-10 lead.
In the final half inning of the game, St. Cloud State mounted a heroic comeback. Weiss hit an RBI-single to bring the first of four Husky runs in. The Huskies trailed by one with two outs before Frechette earned a bases loaded walk to tie the game. Freshman outfielder Kori Needham (Milan, Ill.) made the most out of her pinch running opportunity, scoring the game-winning run after a MISU wild pitch, completing the comeback with two outs in epic fashion.
