St. Cloud State Softball Travels to Duluth for Tuesday Conference Clash

Huskies play UMD Tuesday at 2 and 4 p.m.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (30-11, 9-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) begins a six-game road trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Minnesota Duluth (28-12, 8-4 NSIC). First pitches from Malosky Stadium in Duluth are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. (note – the games were originally supposed to be played on Wednesday).

SERIES HISTORY
The Huskies are 43-69 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and have dropped the last three games to UMD. Earlier this season, SCSU fell to the Bulldogs, 10-3 in its season opener at the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament in St. Cloud on Feb. 1.

SCHOOL RECORD ALERT
After drawing a walk in the 10-3 victory over Concordia-St. Paul on April 6, senior infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) broke her tie with Morgan Emmans (2016-19) to become the program lead in career walks, with 91.

UNDEFEATED EICKHOFF
Senior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) is perfect on the season (13-0) and leads the team wins, shutouts (four), K/BB ratio (4.79) and BB/7 inn. (1.11). She also ranks second in starts (18), second in complete games (seven), second in WHIP (1.11), second in innings pitched (88.0), second in strikeouts (67), third in ERA (2.15) and third in appearances (19).

BROOKE MAKES IT HO(L)ME(S) A LOT
Sophomore infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) leads SCSU in on-base percentage (.464), slugging percentage (.657), home runs (seven), RBIs (36), RBIs/game (0.88), runs (43), runs/game (1.05), total bases (88), times hit by a pitch (4) and assists (71). She ranks second in batting average (.403), hits (54), doubles (11), and assists/game (1.73).

MAGNIFICANT MACEY
Right handed pitcher Macey Clark (Winneconne, Wis.) leads the team in complete games (11), starts (20), appearances (21), innings pitched (119.1), strikeouts (99), WHIP (1.08), opponents' batting average (.230), and hits allowed/7 inn. (5.98). She also ranks second in wins (12), ERA (2.05), shutouts (three), saves (one) K/BB ratio (3.67) and BB/7 inn. (1.58).

JP THE CLOSER
Junior right-handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) is tied for second among all pitchers in Division II in saves (six) and tied for the lead in the NSIC. She leads the team in ERA (1.58), ranks second in hits allowed/7 inn. (6.33), is second in appearances (20) and is third in WHIP (1.23).

REESE'S PIECES
Senior catcher/outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) leads the NSIC in hits (58). She leads the team in batting average (.411), doubles (12), triples (five), triples/game (0.13) and stolen bases (12). She also ranks second in slugging percentage (.596), runs (35), runs/game (0.88) and total bases (82). Holzhueter is also third on the team in on-base percentage (.453).

THE WEISS IS RIGHT
Sophomore catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) is tied for the team lead in sacrifice flies (three). She is also third in hits (42), third in runs (27), third in home runs (three – tie), fourth in RBIs (26 – tie), third in total bases (63), fourth in slugging percentage (.488), fourth in batting average (.326) and fourth in doubles (eight).

FITZMAGIC
Senior infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) leads the Huskies in walks (27), walks/game (0.70) and sacrifice flies (three – tie). She also ranks second in on-base percentage (.455), third in batting average (.339), third in doubles (10), third in home runs (three – tie), fourth in hits (39), fourth in slugging percentage (.504), fourth in total bases (58), and fifth in RBIs (24).

FIRST RANKED WIN SINCE 2023
The Huskies beat No. 10 Augustana, 5-2 on Friday, marking the program's first win against a ranked opponent since March 5, 2023, when SCSU beat No. 8 Grand Valley State 1-0 in Florida. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak against ranked opponents and was the Vikings first conference loss of the season.

NFCA DII PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCHLIST
Sophomore infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) was named the 2025 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Player of the Year watchlist, as announced by the organization on March 27.

In total, 116 student-athletes from across the country were revealed as part of the 2025 NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year watchlist. Holmes is one of four position players from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) to be named to the list along with one pitcher. In all, the group consists of 88 programs from 21 different conferences.

The Player of the Year award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievements among softball student-athletes throughout NCAA Division II. In 2019, the Association expanded the award to include a Player and Pitcher of the Year.

NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Player of the Week by the league office on Feb. 24. It was the first weekly conference award of her career, and she became the first Husky to earn weekly honors this season.

PRESEASON POLLING
St. Cloud State was selected to finish seventh in the 2025 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on January 23. Additionally, senior infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) was named the Player to Watch, and junior right-handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) was named the Pitcher to Watch.

Head Coach Mitch Roberts enters his fourth season at the helm of the Huskies Softball in 2025. He has record of 100-64 (.610) and led last year's team to a 30-26 overall record, including 12-16 record in NSIC play, to finish eighth in the standings. The Huskies took down ninth-seeded Sioux Falls in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament, 6-2, before falling to the hosts and eventual champions, Augustana, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

On his 2025 team outlook...
"We are returning five starters and feel confident about the players stepping into the roles we've lost," said Roberts, "In addition, we've added depth in the circle, which strengthens our overall pitching staff. With solid improvements in all areas, we believe we have the right pieces in place to make a strong push and improve our standing in conference play."

On NSIC Player to Watch Maggie Fitzgerald...
"Maggie brings a presence to the plate and will be a cornerstone of our offensive production this year," said Roberts, "Her experience, professionalism, and strong work ethic have set her up for success this spring. We're excited to see what her senior year has in store and the impact she'll make on the field."

"Justyce brings an invaluable quality to our team," said Roberts, "Her uniqueness is key to her consistent success. With her competitiveness and mindset, she excels in high-pressure situations, making her a perfect fit to come in late and close out games. We are excited to see the things she will achieve this year."

WELCOME TO THE PACK
SCSU welcomed seven newcomers over the offseason, including two junior college transfers – right handed pitcher Macey Clark (Winneconne, Wis. / Winneconne HS / Bryant & Stratton – Wisconsin) and infielder/catcher Sydney Roe (Davenport, Iowa / Assumption HS / Kirkwood CC) and five freshman – infielder Grace Dahmen (Jordan, Minn. / Jordan HS), catcher Morgan Honeycutt (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount HS), right handed pitcher Madeline Nutter (Elko New Market, Minn. / Lakeville South HS), right handed pitcher Madison Soule (Shakopee, Minn. / Shakopee HS) and infielder Hannah Weckman (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North HS).

THE SENIORS
Six athletes will compete in their senior campaign in 2025 as fifth year infielder Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.) is joined by true seniors right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.), infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.), catcher/outfielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.), right handed pitcher Molly Gross (Columbia Heights, Minn.), and utility Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn.).

THE JUNIORS
The lone returning junior on the roster is right-handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.).

THE SOPHOMORES
Five true sophomores – outfielder Bree Beck (Lakeville, Minn.), outfielder Hannah Harms (Bartlett, Ill.), infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.), outfielder Kori Needham (Milan, Ill.) and catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) are joined by redshirt sophomore infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) and redshirt freshman utility Kaylee Collins (Lakeville, Minn.).
