Kelly Laas Memorial Invite Gets Underway Tonight

Husky Dome to Host 2nd Annual Event
St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team hosts the Second Annual Kelly Laas Memorial Invite beginning tonight in the Husky Dome on the university campus.
Five teams will participate in this year's invitational. The Huskies are joined by Bemidji State University, Dickinson State University, Minot State University and Valley City State University. A total of ten games will be played Friday through Sunday.
Tournament History: This year marks the ninth year of the Husky Dome Classic and the second year as the Kelly Laas Memorial Invite. On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, SCSU senior softball player Kelly Laas lost her battle with ovarian cancer at her home in Frankfort, Illinois. Laas began her Husky softball career in 2008 and was an elementary education major at SCSU. In her memory St. Cloud State has renamed the annual Husky Dome Classic to the Kelly Laas Memorial Husky Dome Invite starting in 2012. One dollar of each admission price will be donated to teh Ovarian Cancer Fund - Minnesota Chapter, in memory of Kelly Laas. In addition a Coaches vs. Cancer raffle will be held during the invitational and fans will have the opportunity to win prizes.

8 p.m. - St. Cloud State vs. Valley City State
Saturday, March 2
10 a.m. - Bemidji State vs. Dickinson State
12 noon - St. Cloud State vs. Bemidji State
2 p.m. - St. Cloud State vs. Dickinson State
4 p.m. - Bemidji State vs. Minot State
6 p.m. - Valley City State vs. Minot State
Sunday, March 3
10 a.m. - Dickinson State vs. Valley City State
12 noon - Dickinson State vs. Minot State
2 p.m. - St. Cloud State vs. Minot State
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students age 2-12th grade, and SCSU students are admitted free with a valid I.D.
SCSU Notes: St. Cloud State is 4-5 overall. The Huskies have been on the road and played in Las Vegas, Nev., on the opening week of play and last weekend participated in the NSIC/MIAA Crossover Tournament in Rochester, Minn. A pair of Huskies, first-year centerfielder Taylor Thomas (Rontana, Calif.) and senior catcher Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) are hitting .414 this season. Both players have started all nine games. Thomas leads the Huskies in home runs with four followed by Hogan with three. Sophomore pitcher Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) has made seven appearances and posted a 4-3 record. She has thrown 44.1 innings, struck out 59 batters and an earned run average of 2.03.
