Kelly Laas Memorial Invite Continues Saturday

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team opened the 2013 Kelly Laas Memorial Dome Invitational with a 9-4 win over Valley City State University Friday night at the Husky Dome.

St. Cloud State improves to 5-5 on the season and is 1-0 at home.

After walking the first two batters of the game and giving up a run, SCSU sophomore pitcher Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) settled into a groove and struck out ten of the next 13 batters. She pitched four innings, gave up one run and is 5-3 this season.

The Huskies scored five runs in the bottom of the first as senior catcher Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) doubled in two runs, Kelsie Fitch (Carver) hit an rbi single and Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa) doubled in two runs.

Fitch went three-for-three at the plate with two rbi's. Hogan was two-for-four with two rbi and senior shortstop Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) was two-for-four at the play with an rbi.

Sophomore Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) pitched three innings for the Huskies and struck out five batters.

Valley City State shortstop Courtney Shadlock had two hits for the Vikings. Valley City had five hits in the game, while the Huskies knocked out 14 hits.

In the other game tonight, Bemidji State defeated Valley City State, 6-2.

The Huskies will play Bemidji State University Saturday at 12 noon.
