NSIC Indoor Men’s and Women’s Track Field Championships Start This Weekend in Mankato

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) men's and women's indoor track and field championships are this weekend, Feb. 26-27, in Myers Fieldhouse on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato. Both the St. Cloud State men's and women's track and field teams are in competition.
Field events begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 26, with the track scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 27, the field events start at 10 a.m. followed by the running events at 1 p.m. The awards presentation is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. All-Conference performers consist of the top-three place winners in each event and the members of the top two relay teams from the conference meet.
The SCSU men's indoor team placed fifth at the 2015 NSIC Indoor Championships with 45 points, while the women were seventh overall with 37 points.
The two teams had five athletes that earned NSIC All-Conference honors last season.
Junior Patience Yalartai earned All-NSIC honors twice at the 2015 indoor championships with third place finishes in the long jump (18'11.25") and the triple jump (39'05.25"). She also earned All-NSIC recognition at the 2014 indoor championships by placing third in the triple jump.
On the men's side junior JoVonte Suber earned NSIC All-Conference recognition and finished second in the 400m (49.28). Fellow junior Keyshawn Davis also was all-conference after finishing as the runner-up in the long jump (23'05.50"). Senior Ryan Johnson earned an all-conference nod after finishing third in the shot put (53'06.50"). He also finished fourth in the weight throw (59'04.25"). Johnson has twice this season, including this past week, been named the NSIC Field Athlete of the Week.
The Huskies enter the indoor championships with athletes ranked in the top five in the conference in the men's 60m (J.T. Butler – 5th), men's 200m (J.T. Butler – 4th), men's 400m (JoVonte Suber – 1st), men's 600m (Wezley Turner – 3rd and JoVonte Suber – 4th), women's 5,000m (Sam Sunstrom – 4th), men's 4x400 relay (St. Cloud State – 2nd), men's long jump (Keyshawn Davis – 2nd), women's long jump (Patience Yalartai – 2nd), men's triple jump (Elijah Pitchford – 5th), women's triple jump (Patience Yalartai – 1st), men's shot put (Ryan Johnson – 1st and Quinn Anderson – 3rd), women's shot put (Cassie Cardinal – 4th) and the men's weight throw (Ryan Johnson – 1st)
