SCSU Has Three Earn All-Conference Recognition After First Day of NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships

MANKATO, Minn. – St. Cloud State's indoor track and field programs saw freshman Desmond Deshay and junior Patience Yalartai and senior Ryan Johnson all earn all-conference recognition after the first day of the 2016 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, Feb. 27, at Myers Fieldhouse on the campus of Minnesota State. The women's program ended the first day in seventh place with 14 points. The men's program completed its first day of action also in seventh place with 21 points.
Deshay was the runner-up with jump of 7.05m in the long jump to get eight points for the team. His fellow freshman teammate Elijah Pitchford scored five points and finished just below the top three in fourth place with his leap of 6.99m. Pitchford and junior Keyshawn Davis are both competing on Saturday in the men's triple jump.
Yalartai also finished second in the long jump for SCSU with her leap of 5.73m to earn eight points. The leap also improved upon her previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event. Yalartai will be back in competition along with sophomore Natalie Gottschalk in the triple jump on Saturday.

Johnson placed second in the weight throw with his toss of 18.79m for eight points. It marked the seventh time that Johnson has placed in the top three of the weight throw this season. Johnson leads the delegation of four men that will compete in the shot put on Saturday. Besides Johnson also throwing is senior Eric Johnson, junior Quinn Anderson and senior Rafael Saez.
Junior Sam Sunstrom earned four points for the women's program in placing fifth in the finals of the 3000m (10:11.44). Sunstrom and sophomore Zia Matti will both compete in the 5,000m on Saturday.

In the preliminaries, junior Jasmine Grant placed fifth in the 400m dash (58.35) and will compete in Saturday's finals.
SCSU's female 4x400 relay team of Grant, sophomore Emily Yeager, Gottschalk and junior Kristen Wendt are also in competition on Saturday. As is senior Heather Clankie and redshirt junior Cassie Cardinal in the shot put.

In the preliminaries on the men's side, freshman Vance Barnes placed seventh in the 60m dash (6.97), sophomore Sebastian Sowada won the one mile (4:22.73), sophomore J.T. Butler finished sixth in the 200m dash (22.53) and freshman Wezley Turner placed sixth in the 600m (1:24.91). All four advance on to Saturday's finals in each event.
Also in the preliminaries on the men's track side, SCSU was able to take each of the first three places in the 400m dash. Junior JoVonte Suber won the heat (49.24), sophomore Isaiah Pitchford was second (49.68) and sophomore Marcus Welk was third (49.76). All three are headed to Saturday's finals.
Also competing on Saturday for the men's team is freshman Tremayne Collins in the 5,000m and the 4x400 relay team of Welk, Suber, Turner and Isaiah Pitchford.
SCSU's teams return to the track on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. for the start of the field events. The running events are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
