Softball Opens NSIC Play This Week

SCSU hosts UMD on Tuesday and on the Road to take on MSU Mankato and Concordia-St. Paul Over the Weekend
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (14-11), who are riding a five-game winning streak, opens up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play this week by hosting Minnesota Duluth (11-6) on Tuesday, March 22, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Selke Field. The home outdoor games will be the first of the season for the program. The team then continues league play with a pair of road NSIC doubleheaders against Minnesota State, Mankato (17-7) on Friday, March 25, starting at 1 p.m. and against Concordia-St. Paul (6-14) on Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m.

SCSU softball plays six games at home next week starting with a doubleheader against Northern State on March 29 starting at 2 p.m. The program then has a busy weekend of action and hosts Winona State for two games on April 2 beginning at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader against Upper Iowa on April 3 starting at 1 p.m.

- Minnesota State, Mankato are also playing well and went 9-1 on the team's most recent trip to Florida.
- The team played in the Apple Market Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. last weekend and went 3-2.
- MSU Mankato is under the direction of Lori Meyer, who is her 32nd season in charge of the program.
- The pitching staff for the Mavericks has led the way with Coley Ries winning the NSIC's Pitcher of the Week honors on March 15.
- Ries is 11-3 so far this season with a 1.26 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 89.0 innings pitched.
- Ries just threw the third no-hitter of her career on Sunday, March 20, against Central Oklahoma
- Libby Bemis has also pitched well with a 2.18 ERA, a 6-4 record and 60 strikeouts in 70.2 innings pitched.
- McKenzie Papp leads the team in hitting with a .443 batting average and 27 hits.
- Karli DesLauriers is also hitting .400 plus has 26 hits and 13 RBIs.
- Dana Mogren is hitting .365 with 16 runs, 27 hits, two home runs and 18 RBIs
- Concordia-St. Paul also played in the Apple Market Classic last weekend and went 0-6 in the tournament.
- The Golden Bears are under the direction of Bob Bartel, who is in his 12th season in charge of the program.
- Justine Schattner has been the team's top hitter with her .415 batting average and 27 hits plus seven doubles, two home runs and 21 RBIs
- Nicole Thompson has also hit well with a .403 batting average, 14 runs and 25 hits.
- Liz Jarosz has totaled a .316 batting average, 12 runs, six doubles and 11 RBIs.
- Linzy Heim has a team high four wins and also leads the team with 69 innings thrown and 33 strikeouts.
- The Huskies went 7-5 on the team's trip to Florida, but went 5-1 in the last week of action including five straight wins to close out the trip.
- Jessica Goerger led the team in RBIs on the trip to the Spring Games with 11.
- Freshman Morgan Emmans made her five hits count on the trip by lacing three doubles and driving in six runs.
- Head coach Paula U'Ren had a memorable trip to Florida as she picked up her 600th career victory both overall and at St. Cloud State with the team's 11-2 victory over Le Moyne College on March 8.
- Junior outfielder Abby Bunnell was named the NSIC's Softball Player of the Week on March 14 for the first time in her career.
- For the week of March 7-13, Bunnell helped the Huskies go 5-1.
- She had team highs in batting average (.556), hits (10), home runs (1), stolen bases (4) and walks (4).
- She also was tied for second on the team in total bases (13) and on-base percentage (.636).
- Despite being a leadoff hitter, Bunnell was third on the team in RBIs with six while recording at least a hit and a run scored in all six games.
- Bunnell is the first Huskies' softball player to earn a weekly award from the NSIC since Kelly Franks was named Pitcher of the Week on April 28, 2015.
- Bunnell is the first SCSU position player to take home a weekly award from the NSIC since Ally Koski during the 2010 season.
- Freshman pitcher Kate Kopeck won four of the team's seven games on the trip with a 2.33 ERA in 24.0 innings thrown.
- Kopeck is tied for the team lead on the season with five wins.
- Bunnell is the current team leader in with a .400 batting average, 22 runs, 34 hits and 17 stolen bases.
- She is also second on the team with her 15 RBIs and seven walks
- Bunnell also leads the squad with her 11 multi-hit games.
- Junior Alyssa Coletto is second on the team with her .397 batting average and 31 hits.
- Junior Rebecca Harps has had a strong start to her third season in a Huskies' uniform with a .380 batting average, 18 runs, 27 hits, four doubles and 14 RBIs.
- Her 27 hits this season are three times as many as she had her first two seasons combined.
- Goerger leads the team in home run with three and RBIs with 18.
- She also has been hit by eight pitches and walked 11 times for an on-base percentage of .527.
- Goerger also leads the team with her .648 slugging percentage, while totaling six multi-RBI contests.
- Sophomore Veronica Wold is tied for the team lead with six multi-RBI games and third overall with her 14 RBIs on the season.
- Jaiden Lund is 12th nationally in triples with three.
- Senior Senna Francesconi is tied her the team lead with her five wins and leads the squad with her 72.1 innings pitched, 54 strikeouts and five complete games.
