Wins First Game 3-1 and Falls in Night Cap 1-0
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (16-13, 2-2 NSIC) received two strong pitching performances in the program's split doubleheader against Minnesota State (20-9, 3-1 NSIC) on Friday, March 26, at the Husky Dome. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Mankato, but were moved to St. Cloud due to a late March snow storm.
Junior Megan Hedstrom (5-7) picked up the victory for the Huskies in the first game in allowing one run in five innings. Freshman Kate Kopeck earned her first career save with two scoreless innings to close out the game. Coley Ries was tagged with the loss (12-4) despite allowing just three runs (two runs) and striking out 16.
SCSU scored first in the opening game in the second inning. Freshman Jaiden Lund started the two-out rally by getting hit by a pitch. Sophomore Libby Bingham then walked to put a pair of runners on base. Senior Taige Puetz then lined a single to right field to drive in Lund from second base for the first run. The next batter saw Bingham scampered home with the team's second run of the frame on a pass ball.
The Huskies added an insurance tally to the lead in the third inning as junior Jessica Goerger was able to leg out a leadoff triple. She was plated on senior Tricia DeBoer's single to left field.
The Mavericks broke through for their run in the fifth inning, but also stranded runners on second and third to close the inning. MSU's Emily Bransky scored on the deep sacrifice fly from Dana Mogren.
The second game was a great pitching performance for both the Huskies and the Mavericks.
SCSU senior Senna Francesconi (6-5) only allowed one run and four hits in her 6.1 innings of work, but it came on the walk-off home run to Kara Lattery in the bottom of the seventh inning. Libby Bemis (7-4) gave just three hits in throwing the complete game shutout for MSU.
The Huskies' best chance to score came in the fourth inning as junior Abby Bunnell recorded a leadoff single. Alyssa Coletto reached first on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt in which no out was able to be recorded, but the next three SCSU batters were retired on a pop out, a fielder's choice and strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
The SCSU three hits in the second game came by Bunnell, junior Alyssa Coletto and Puetz.
Next, St. Cloud State will host Concordia-St. Paul (6-16, 0-2 NSIC) on Saturday, March 26, in a doubleheader starting at noon at the Husky Dome.
