SCSU Beats Le Moyne 11-2 and Indiana University of Pennsylvania 11-1; Paula U’Ren Records 600th victory of her career.
CLERMONT, Fla. – St. Cloud State's softball team (12-11) took care of business with a sweep of Le Moyne College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, March 8, in the team's fifth day at the Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The team defeated Le Moyne by an 11-2 score in the first game and then downed Indiana University of Pennsylvania by an 11-1 margin in the second contest. The win in the first game was a historic one for head softball coach Paula U'Ren as it was the 600th of her career at SCSU.
In the first game, freshman Kate Kopeck (4-2) earned the victory against the Dolphins with five innings and two runs allowed with three strikeouts. Le Moyne College's Marisa DuVal (0-1) was the tough luck loser in the game as she allowed nine runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings thrown.
Le Moyne started the scoring with a pair of runs in the opening inning. SCSU quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with a seven spot. Junior Abby Bunnell reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error from the left fielder. Junior Rebecca Harps, who reached on that fielding error, moved to second on the misplay and then third on a wild pitch. Junior Jessica Goerger walked and senior Tricia DeBoer recorded a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore Veronica Wold drew a walk to drive in Harps from third with the team's second run of the frame. Freshman Morgan Emmans hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Goerger with the third tally. On the attempted play at third off the ball hit by Emmans, the ball was thrown away to allow DeBoer to score the team's fourth run. Sophomore Libby Bingham was then hit by a pitch. Senior Taige Puetz recorded an infield single to score Wold with the fifth run. Bunnell then ripped a single to left to score both Puetz and Bingham with the six and seven runs of the opening frame.
SCSU added two more runs in the second inning with Wold and Emmans both driving in runs.
The Huskies completed the scoring to make the final margin 11-2 with two runs in the fourth inning on a one-out two-run single from Emmans. Emmans recorded four of the team's eight RBIs in the opening game.
The bats stayed hot in the second game of the afternoon with SCSU scoring a single tally in the opening frame against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Bunnell walked to start the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Harps' double to left field.
The Huskies added two more runs in the second on Puetz's two-run single through the left side.
In the fifth inning, a Harps single drove in one and a Goerger triple drove in a pair of runs.
Indiana University Pennsylvania scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the deficit at five, 6-1.
SCSU put the game away with a five-spot in the top of the seventh inning with the big hit being a bases loaded double to left by Wold to clear the bases.
Senior Senna Francesconi (4-4) had a complete game for the Huskies in allowing just one unearned run and five hits with five strikeouts. Lauren Zola (1-2) was tagged with the loss for the Crimson Hawks with six runs allowed in five innings.
