Softball Falls To Ferris State, 8-4, and Lynn University, 3-2, On First Day of Spring Games

Clermont, Fla. – St. Cloud State's softball team (9-3) lost a pair of games on the first day of the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The program dropped its first game of the day by an 8-4 score to Ferris State (3-6) and lost the early afternoon game by a 3-2 margin to Lynn University (15-10).
Sophomore Maya Keating led the offense with three hits on the day. Freshman Kylie Thomsen recorded a pair of hits. Freshman Megan Conrads picked up two hits, a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Haley McFarlane also hit a home run among her two hits. Freshman Amanda Moncelle drove in a run with her hit.
Junior Kate Kopeck (2-2) took the loss in the first game in surrendering five runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings in the circle.
Thomsen (7-1) was tagged with the loss against Lynn despite allowing three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings worked.
Game One
Ferris State scored three runs in the first inning with Lexi Hongisto hitting a two-run home run.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning on two hits and an error.
The Huskies answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Caitlyn Jordan recorded a pinch hit single to start the frame and scored on the first career home run from Conrads. Junior Morgan Emmans walked and scored on an error later in the frame.
Ferris State rallied with three runs in the top of the sixth inning on three hits to go up 8-3.
The Huskies finished off the scoring the contest in the seventh inning as Emmans drove in Keating with a double to make the final score 8-4.
Sam Bates (2-3) earned the win for Ferris State in going the first four innings with one run allowed.
Game Two
Lynn University scored first in the game with a run in the opening frame as Mackenzie Wyatt drove in Francais Olexa with an RBI ground out. Olexa began the game with a triple.
The Huskies wrestled the lead back with two runs in the second inning. MacFarlane hit a one-out home run to tie the game. Thomsen then reached on a two-out single and scored on Moncelle's double to center field to give the Huskies their first lead of the game and of the day.
The Fighting Knights tied the game at two all in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sophia Devesa's home run.
The game remained knotted at two until the bottom of the seventh. Erin Sundook started the rally by walking. She moved to second on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt from Devesa that saw no out recorded. Both runners stole a base to move into scoring position. Natalie Costero reached on a fielder's choice where Sundook was thrown out at home as she attempted to score the winning run. On the ensuing play, Costero stole second as the ball was thrown away on the steal to allow Devesa to score the game winning run.
The Huskies continue play in the Spring Games on Wednesday, March 7, with two more games. The program takes on Lewis University at 8 a.m. and Stonehill College at 10:30 a.m.
